So it only cost me about $20 total for an auto top off that lasts me a week.

That's funny that you mention the sockets. I bent the hell out of mine the first bulb change.
I thought it was just me being new to DE M/H.
The sockets were easy and cheap enough to replace.

I would think that running small amounts of media would cause it to get beat up more and break down.

Once your phosphates are under control adding the max capacity of media shouldn't stress...
