TOOO MMUUUCCCCHHHH!!!!!!

Bangi Cardinal, Green Chromis(to school with one we already had), Hammer coral, some polyps, some other corals i don't remember the name of that my wife picked out, frozen food.

to top it off, i upgraded my lighting from 2 36" flourescent strips to 192W PC fixture. just floating things now. can't wait to see the tank with the fixture on it!!!

71goalie
01/17/2004, 06:36 PM
I need some guidance on how long i should run the fixture -

I was planning on just running one bulb for awhile, then slowly increase the amount of time for the second bulb. any suggestions? it is the double bulb coralife fixture.

JonK

WOW!!! Don't forget to save some room for the corals you get at the swap! I'm going to head over tomorrow and hopefully he will still have a Coral Beauty left. Keep us posted on the Banggai, you might need to feed some live brine to get it to eat. Alot of people have been having problems keeping Banggai Cardinals alive. How much were the Banggai's if you don't mind me asking.
Did he have any of them left?

When I went from my 4 40 watt NO lighting to 440 watts of VHO I kept the lighting schedule the same, I didn't notice anything react badly to it but I didn't have that many corals at the time.

Jon

When ByTor "hooked me up" with all those SPS, he had me cut back DRASTICALLY on the photoperiod. I am/was very new to SPS and my LPS/softies were used to 12 hours of light. Since there was a major difference in lighting across our tanks, he had me start the SPS off at 6 hours, with the 2 X VHO's on for the 12 hours. The photoperiod was to increase by 30 minutes every two weeks, so I'm at 8.5 hours of MH now. Even cutting back, I blame the lights for some of the early bleaching, because some of the ones that I moved under overhangs have since started to color up.
I think the LPS might not like a major shift in Wattage, but I doubt the 'shrooms and softies would actually be harmed.
Oh, BTW, I'm home. I-80 is a sheet of ice and snow, over the mountains near Lock Haven. Fortunately, most people did slow down.
I'm acclimating the new guys now.

Goalie, nice seeing you and your better half. (She's a lot prettier than you are (g)).

When I got there, they said that someone had bought a lot of the acros this morning (groan). Fortunately, there was still a good selection to buy before you get there tomorrow (evil grin). As mentioned, they were "buy 2 and get the 3rd free". Since I can't even GET SPS out here in the boonies (except by the kindness of strangers), I bought 4 "pair" and got 4 for free. I tried to talk Todd into letting me have a dozen, but he wouldn't go for that. Instead I just got 12. The individuals are green, purple, or powder blue. Beautiful critters. Todd calls them "nano colonies" which is a nice way to say "fully formed, and WAY past frag size, but not adult colony size". The billing as "nano colonies" is accurate, though, because in a nano they'd be just about as big as you'd want in there.
I just got done acclimating them and placing them in "shady" spots. Now we keep our fingers crossed....Miserable drive home with snow and ice. Well worth it, though.

What was his stock like? I would have time to go up there before the Eagles Game.

Are the Eagles playing? (jk). I didn't notice a CBB, but I was concentrating on the corals. All of the fish I looked at looked healthy, but many would have just arrived last week. The vast majority of the corals looked great. The exception was the tank to the right, behind the entrance door, in the corner. They all looked rough. Might have been discards from the recent shipment though. They had some great looking hammers, frogspawns, and LPS. HTH,

They were $25 each, so $50/3 = $16.67 each (plus the governors pound of flesh). There might have been 18 to 20 SPS there when I left, which was pretty much closing time.
Well worth the drive for me, but that's just me. You're about an hour closer.

Sorry, I turned the halides off to let them adjust. Maybe tomorrow. All of them are very similar in shape, and pretty much "plain vanilla" acro shaped. Some are a bit spikier, but most have club shaped branches. I'd say most of them have 15 - 20 short branches.

Did you notice if they had any Coral Beauty Angelfish left? Good to hear you made it home okay. I didn't feel like dragging all the kids w/ me so I didn't get over there. I haven't been over there in a while but it sounds like he got a good shipment in.

Nix,
Stay tuned, I couldn't stand it, so I turned on the lights and snapped a few pictures. I'll post here, when I have them uploaded into my gallery. Most of them aren't as nicely colored, given this rude treatment today, but it'll give you an idea.

i don't remember seeing a coral beauty - i saw a flame angel and a black angel (looks alot like a coral beaty [to me atleast]). just got everything situated and the two fish are in the hospital tank. todd told me the bangaii was already readily eating flake and frozen food, which gave me some confidence. hopefully SHE'LL eat for me tomorrow. The light fixture is awesome. it really works well. the tank looks even better now. now i just need to figure out where the next tank is going to go! :)

JonK - the cardinal was $20.

they had something i never saw before (and of course my wife fell in love with it) - a koko worm. it is in a hard white tube and looks like an orange christmas tree when it come out. they usually are $40. they were selling them for $30. i got a really nice hammer frag with 2 heads for $15. i got a korky finger gorgonian, a black quill gorgonian, and a nice piece of pagoda (like polyps). everything has already come out except for the korky finger.

That Fish Place has a postcard in the store that gives you 10% off of any one item. I think that they are still doing that in January. You should call to be sure. They are redoing their fish room. They do not have much, so Todd's livestock is better than TFP for sure.

I wasn't able to go to the phishy place and some of you are talking about what you bought so I thought (if no one minds) that I would share the corals I just got from ebay. All three for $20.00.

These are the actual full corals not frags. I bought from the seller before and his corals are really nice.

carribeanlovers, is that wmsamples from eBay? His shipping is typically $60 for two or more gorgonians. I have contacted him to buy off auction or in bulk but he always "raises" his prices when I ask. He quoted me $82 total for an item which auctioned for less then $20 before shipping. If you got all three for $20 then you did great! Congrats!! They are usually that much each.

Anyway, I'm not trying to take away from your good buy, but you gotta watch those eBayer's and the shipping charge scam. I sell on eBay too and so I see these guys items there all the time. McFish does the same but he states shipping prices up front and sells off auction for the same or lower prices.

Let us know what the shipping charges were when you find out.

carribeanlovers
01/18/2004, 04:33 PM
bob- yes it is wmsamples - whatever the shipping is it will be exactly what it should be because we are not paying him. The shipment will be charged with our UPS account. The amount of the shipping is calculated by UPS not the person shipping them. So our charge most likely won't be what it would have been if we paid the seller. But thanks for your concern.

carribeanlovers
01/18/2004, 04:55 PM
I have had the account for about a year now and it is very nice. I haven't had any problems and it makes things easier. Go to www.ups.com and pick United States (of course), click on the shipping tab and near the bottom of the page click on open account. When you go there it seems like you can only set it up for a business but it's really for personal or business. Let me know if you have questions.:)

I couldn't believe that ebay didn't pull that auction with how picky they are.

They were $25 each, but buy 2 and get one free. So $16.67 each. That's a "special" and I don't know when it's over.

So true. Not that it'd help, but can the player who committed that be fined by the league? Even if the official threw the flag, I fear that the result would have been the same. The ribs would have still been racked, so to speak.

I do have the badges typed up, and I'll do a page of a person's name that is trading to hang up on the wall.

I also wanted to say that I only have badges for those that are registered on the site and gave me a real name. If you have a spouse or a child in the head count for your login and you want me to print a badge for them ahead of time, you have to let me know their names (PM me). Otherwise I'll have some stick on badges there to write it on yourself.

I don't know what the place looks like, but when you come in I'll have your badge, a sign for you to hang and some tape lying around...find a spot, hang your sign, and chill. I am NOT going to print out a list of everybody's trades for each person, so please go to the web site and do that from the button on your "my trades" page the night before. I will however have print out a few copies of the trades page to keep around incase anybody forgets, but the button on the "my trades" pages is geared specifically for the user logged in.

See y'all in 20 days. :)

I figure folks will leave there "stash" in their area, then folks can either come to them, or they can got to other folks when they have a minute. If you fear leaving your stuff unattended then do what you're comfortable with. The signs will make it easier to find each other since I know people are going to being moving around alot.

With the signs..if I show up to your sign and you're not there, I'll try back later or hunt you down. :) But I atleast know where you'll be once in a while.

finding and meeting different people is going to be most of the fun at the meeting. the rest of the fun will come when you place the frags in your tank. if you just were interested in the frag and not the company, than you could have just gone to a LFS!! you'll just have to walk up to someone and introduce yourself just like i did with tagamet at something fishy (my wife still couldn't believe i actually did that...)

I'll probably put the same info on the printout to hang up. I think things will be a little different this time because we'll all be in the same room and be able to spread out. At mo's we had people in the living room, dining room, kichen, on the steps, in the hallway, on the porch and some stragglers out back and in the basement. I pity Mo's carpet...not that I can even be sure he had one since it was pretty coverd with boxes and feet! :) Props to Mo and his wife for putting up with us!

this brings up a good point that since i'm new to this frag thing, i must ask. don't want to make brad an example, but based on his last message, here it goes. brad may have a coral with some type of disease or sickness. if i get a frag off of him that was in the some tank as his sick one and place it into my tank, will it affect the rest of my corals? I don't have a hospital tank for corals, only fish. the lighting in my hospital tank is unacceptable for corals.

Thanks for holding the frags, it was nice to see your tank. Sorry about your black perc. That's why I have a hard time adding fish to my tank for fear of it giving something to my current inhabitants.

Tag,

I have a mini carpet for you. I'm going to list it so I have a record of it. Just click on the request button so your name is up there. We can just trade the mushroom for the anemone. Hopefully they will reproduce faster in your tank.

Fizz71

How many people out there actually quarantine ANY coral? I know some people who dip them, but quarantine? I don't have a QT tank with sufficient lighting to keep any coral alive for any decent length of time. My QT right now is an eclipse..no lighting upgrades. I acclimate, and that's it.

From what I've read, and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, it's far more common to get diseases from a fish than a coral. Now I've always wondered about how some of these softies are basically composed of tank water which means it's nearly impossible to not get the other person's tank water into your tank...but it's not that much...and I would think the water in the coral is somewhat "filtered"...but who know....not me, that's for sure. Bottom line...I don't QT because I don't have the ability to.

I think the real reason that I'm not concerned is that I'm trading corals that reproduced in other folks tanks which means to me that the disease risk is pretty low. Unlike dealer tanks that have things straight from the ocean.

Anyone else?

Correct me if I'm wrong here Brad (or if some one else here got the wrong impression from your post)...Are you implying that my stuff gave your stuff something that killed your fish and torch? I don't think (I certainly hope not) that's what he's saying folks. Especially when you consider that the frags I gave you went in the wife's tank (as I recall) and the perc and torch were in your tank.

I believe Brad was trying to let me know that Jon picked up his stuff. The part about the dead fish and torch was him venting/sharing. I believe they both (perc and torch) came from Todd's this past weekend, right?

I'm really sorry about the fish man. That perc was beautiful and seemed to be getting along well with the male. Hope the torch pulls through for you.

I agree with you Fizz71 I never QT frags, I have enough confidence that the ones I am getting are healthy. If they are coming from an unhealthy tank I am hoping that the person trading them would hold off until everything was healthy. Basiclly if someone trades all sick corals and people complain on RC then no one will want their frags agian

I agree with Fizz also. I don't QT my corals. I take out a container full of tank water and thoroughly rinse them in that container with a turkey baster before putting them in my tank. Then I discard the "rinse" water in the sink. I never put the bag water in my tank, especially LFS bag water.

I just wanted to let you folks out there that are still shopping know that I think Mad-drama made a mistake when he entered his frags...I sent him a PM so we'll see for sure soon...but he put up "20 available" but only "1 remaining" which means as soon as one person gets accepted, the frag is removed from the "trades" page. No problem. I'm just making sure no one thinks that I gave Brad's tank some sort of fatal fish and coral disease. The way the thread was headed (and this could just be my hypersensitivity) it seemed like people may have gotten that impression.

I don't wanna sound stupid but I say that Mad_drama has a copod start kit listed with 10 bristles, 10 mysis, 5 mini sand snails, 10 spagetti worms.

I am just starting a refugium (just a PC light on my sump with some macro) and I don't know if I have any of these things in there. All I know is that in my main tank I have a ton of mini stars all over the glass day and night, some britsle worms and in my sump a bunch of white worms with red fans. Also at night I have a crap load of little guys running around my tank(can't really describe them but they are tiny and like fleas).

Are the things I listed some of the things Mad_drama has listed or am I on a whole different plane here? If so will these "critters" find their way from my main tank down to my refugium?

Rahn

Rahn,

I think it would help if Brad used some punctuation in his posts.
;) No one is trying to say your stuff gave his tank problems. He added a new perc to his tank and it probably introduced something to his other perc. The best thing to do is not put water from anyone else's tank in your tank. I was the one that posted about my Toadstools developing a fungus. When you frag corals you are exposing them. These "diseases" are always present and when you frag you make them even more exposed. If I would have been a little more proactive I probably could have saved most of those leather frags but I didn't think it would spread to all of them. I have fragged them again and these new frags are healthy and attaching. I might have a few to bring yet.

How about flow Rahn? It's getting hit pretty hard right now so I'm thinking I might have to move it. It opened up a few minutes after being in the tank. The Ricordea looks great and I sewed the colt onto a rock so it probably won't be happy for a couple days.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I didn't think anyone gave anyone else's tank dieases. I understood that he was using it as an example. My suggestion for anyone here is in the future if your giving an example just use a fake name. This will avoid confusion and problems IMO. :)

"Are the things I listed some of the things Mad_drama has listed or am I on a whole different plane here? If so will these "critters" find their way from my main tank down to my refugium?"

i'm sure you have all the things i'm offering. these critters will make there way to your fuge. to speed it up, just get a turkey baster and transfer them your self.

Hey Jon!

Glad you like the leather. I have the mother colony in medium flow and it opens nicely everyday. I have one of the frags in low flow and it's doing just as well. So I would say low-medium flow. I've never had it in high flow, so let me know how it does if ya keep it there.

I can tell you that the leather does not like the colt :D . I had both mother colonies near each other and the leather was not happy. It didn't seem to phase the colt, but I had to seperate them...they refused to play nicely :rolleye1: Beerman has a frag of each also and he experienced the same thing.

Funny story... Wife, kids and I were on a cruise which stopped in Cozumel, Mexico. We had to take a cab to our excursion and the driver asked me if I spoke spanish. I said I did :) to which my wife said "You do not!" Well the cab driver and I had a lovely conversation about my wife and the kids. Simple stuff...names, ages, how the trip was going...small talk. I was the man for the rest of the trip...at least with the kids. :rolleye1: It was pretty cool 'cause the wife had no idea... she'll never live that one down!

I just want to get something straight. The Eagles did not choke!!!

THEY GOT BEAT! Carolina's defense did a Jim Johnson on the Eagles, and did to them what they have been doing to others all year.

However, if McNab had not been hit while on the ground, I think the game would have ended differently. Also, Carolina's defensive players were doing all kinds of cheep shots, including holding the Eagles wide receivers. I do not understand why they got away with that the whole game. The Eagles defense played very well, but you have to score points to win.

Well, such is the way it goes. So close, but yet so far.

By the way, I think the choke think was pretty funny.

I'm really sorry to hear about that. The big downside of fish stores where things just fly out of the tanks, is not getting to see that they get adjusted from one shipping before being moved again almost immediately. Although it may not be possible at Something Phishy, I try to get our local store to "put my name" on a fish I like and hold it for a couple of weeks. When I can see that it's survived and is eating well, then I buy it. If it dies in the meantime, it shouldn't have been sold anyway. You are right that Bangii's do have a rep for not eating well. Add to that the idea that SHE was one of those fragile female types, I guess HER odds for survival were even worse.

Banggai's are tough fish. I purchased 3 and they would not feed for the first couple days. Then I got live brine shrimp and they went crazy for it. After a while I would add live brine with frozen. Now they take frozen brine, mysis, squid ...anything meaty. They still won't eat flake food or pellet food. Which is okay. After a pair formed they chased the stragler and he eventually died. My pair are still going strong, I just wish the male would hold full term so I could have baby banggai's.

Fizz,

I have a request for the web site. On the "MY TRADES" page you list the "common trades", which is very nice. What I would find even more helpful is if you could put all of the "items promised to you" and requested by you in a format like the common trades, even if there are no common trades.

You could call it the "trade list". This would allow you to see what is promised to or expected from each person. It would allow us to pack the corals by person instead of by the coral.

It is just a thought, but it would be a great help.

Hay, we are up to 69 for the frag swap! It looks like we may have a chance to break the record of 75 set at the last swap!

And we are up to page 38 -- here comes 50+.

I wonder what the longest thread is at RC?

Mal3
01/22/2004, 11:37 PM
Can you believe that we have 52 members not attending the swap!!! You guys and gals are going to miss out big time! You may want to reconsider.

With the 31 traders and the 14 buyers (and 52 not attending) we are up to 97 members.

Woooo.... Who would have ever thought this would get this big.

The sky is the limit. The LFS's better not get us PO'ed or they could be in real trouble. I see some strong buying power being accumulated here. At this rate of growth, we should be able to get some great deals.

Mal3
01/22/2004, 11:41 PM
bugman426 -- You should hook up with some of your buddies in NY and make the road trip. There are quite a few on RC. Where are you going to get 69 reefers together with deals like these? At the rate we are going, this could get quite large.

I hope you can make it.

For some reason..I could NOT upload that file back up to the site without doing something to the file that made no sense at all.

Anyway...it's back up, and everything should be fine. Sorry about the downtime..it was the oddest thing I've ever seen. And I tried uploading from multiple machines and to multiple places and it always failed on this file at 70%...quite disturbing.

Mal...I'm not ignoring you...I think it's a good idea, but I'm busy until this weekend. I might get a minute to add what you're asking for..it's not a hard thing to do.

I accidentally left my RO topoff pump on last night and flooded my tank with RO water ALL NIGHT. Nice little flood and a sg of 1.016 this morning. I got it up to 1.019 before I ran out of salt..I'll be working on that tonight.

If anybody else has any suggestions to make their experience easier (aside from bagging and driving you there) let me know. I would have never thought of Mals request because I'm really not trading enough to need it!! So that was a good one.

Hey folks... I've been out of town a while and catching up. Anyways... I had to pull a couple trades. My reds for some reason have lost most of color and I'm probably not going to have any ready for the swap. Basically same holds true for the couple tiny blue frags I had up.

The rest of the stuff is still there and while I'm probably not going to post anything else I will see what I can do to bring other stuff like rics and zoo's to the swap.

I will more than likely have some of these with me. I know Beerman was interested and I've gotten a much larger rock since Beerman and Nixnutz were by.

i had a really awesome fragging class tonight i had 71goalie(doug and his wife that we will call mrs.k lol) and reedercontracting (kerry and wendy)it was i good day kerry helped me cut some trees down outside and i thought him and doug some of the basics of fragging.we fragging mostly polyps and leathers and a few mushrooms to.kerry and wendy bought us pizza for dinner and i made frags more kerry to list on fizz's site so please help the new guy out and buy his fresh cut zoos we made a group buy on sunday and i'm choosing to keep my zoo's on the rock for now a want to see how they perk up 1st.and when we where fragging kerry's stuff we found that the bucket his corals were brought in had lot's of bugs running around in his rock work, and he would throw them in my tank!!
doug didn't bring his mushrooms he wanted to frag, but he did buy some of my new frags before i listed them so i only charged his 1/2 price for everything. my donatation to his tankand i even gave him some free macro algae.
all in all i think we had a grand old time.and i can say that i'm active in what the club is all about learning and teaching, not just the good deals on frags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I have been getting a few emails inquiring if I am coming or not.

So here is what I am gonna do. I am planning on attending weather permitting.

If you wish to order something from the website, I can deliver it for free to the swap.

However if I can not come, I will simply refund ALL BUT $1 of your money (which is to cover transaction fees incurred by me) and make the item available again on the website.

So feel free to check the site and if you order use ( frag swap ) in the special promotions box, and it will bill you only for your order, and sales tax if applicable, no box or delivery fees.

If you have questions feel free to email me. I am still hoping that some of my burgh buddies are coming with me.

ps, If there is something you wish for and do not see it listed on the site currently, please email me as soon as possible, as I hope to get another order or two in before the swap. This goes especially for any items that www.orafarm.com sells, such as black and white false percs.

Fizz71, What I am looking for is the Trade report to contain all your buys and sells, if you will. One ledger page with everything on it.

As I read it, The Trade report has all of the items requested from Mal3, but only some of the items requested by Mal3 from others. The items requested by Mal3 are contained in "Items Promised To You" at the top of the page. For Example, I have requested items from Millisec, but he has not request anything from me, so he is not appearing on my Trades report.

In other words, I requested something from another person and they have not requested anything from me, then my request of them is omitted from the "Trade Report"

I hope I am explaining this correctly.

Can someone PM or email me the particulars for this event? I know it is Sunday the 8th and I have the address. I need to know start and finish times and such. I'd dig for the info myself but I just don't have the time to sift through 40+ pages.

Info to be used to lure Pittsburghers out to the swap.

Thanks.

Here is the page for the swap. You must register, then you can see what everyone has left to trade, and list your wares also.

I get first dibs LOL

I am going to attend, as long as the weather permits.

For the things I listed in the frag swap page, cash is ok.

I would rather have stuff pre-purchased from the site.

There were instructions on how to do a page or two ago.

Rob
