You can add the sand first if you want. Mix up your salt water before adding it to the tank. The new sand will cloud up the tank for a few days. You can use a canister filter to help clear it up.

Most likely not, my snowflake makes a meal out of live gulf shrimp between 3 and 5 inches in no time flat! Its about 18" long but very agressive when feeding.
