I never have my return pump running when feeding corals no matter what I am feeding.
Most foods for the corals is very small and most will wind up in the sump if you leave the return running....

For a pump to caviate, it has to get air from somewhere.
Either a leak, the sump is low or the drain from the tank is not keeping up with the return from the pump.
Also what Gary said is possible....
