Similar scratches on my tank were caused by a PBT. It was the barb on his tail that was causing them.

Get a scratch repair kit or just live with it.

The ALK kit I have gives readings in mg/l. mg/l is the same as ppm, right? And 50 ppm is about equal to 2.8 dKH? Right?

So 190 ppm is about the same as 10.6 dKH?

I've never been able to determine with certainty that a sand bed reduces nitrate by any measurable/significant amount. The best method to reduce nitrates IME is a water exchange. That'll work...

It this a glass tank or acrylic? Glass is far more forgiving with respect to bottom support. A glass tank will prolly be ok unless it's way off.
