best time to use search feature

I'm trying to find a thread I had viewed a couple months back, but I've had no luck using the search feature for the past few days. Anyone know when is a good time during the day to get access to it?

I promise I won't tell anyone.

Whenever you are a premium member...j/k

I think it is kind of hit and miss. If you remember which forum it was in the go to that forum and at the bottom of the page is a text box that says "Search this forum" As I recall that was more forgiving, but I have been a premium member for a while so things might have changed.

I've found that between 3:42 a.m. (EST) and 3:42 and 10 seconds gets the best results. Anything outside that, good luck.

I thought it would be easier after I upgraded to a premium membership too, but after I upgraded, it still shows as regular. I'd search the site for how to fix this, but it doesn't go well if you're not a premium member.

Has anyone seen the movie "Catch 22" ?

Run a Google advanced search, and set it for within the reefcentral.com domain only.
Works great.

I support RC.
I can use the search whenever I want.
I dont get why people wont join. Its only 25.00 a year.
I have learned SOOOO much from RC that its worth it to me to join and support such a great site. I could not have done it without RC.

I agree, $25 for a years worth. The knowledge I've gained over the years, doesnt even come close. Just think, if you could pay $25 to save a few coral, or fish, it pays for itself over and over.

When I first signed up with regular membership I could search anytime I wanted. After I while I could not search at all. Now with premium membership it works all the time. But that is not why I signed up for premium membership. I did it to help support this site and to keep it going. I figure $2/month is a small price to pay. But if you don't, use the google search like highlander says. It works great.

I can't ever get search to work. Yes, it would be nice to know how to search again....very frustrating. Don't have a problem supporting something worthwhile, but having to pay to search for a piece of information every once in a while seems crappy. Why force someone to pay just to search. And the note just always says it's disabled due to server issues; if it's really disabled because I am not a premium member, just tell me that.

I understand your frustration. This might be something worth posting in the feedback forum.

In the meantime feel free to use Google, you'll get plenty of hits for RC threads. Or as long as I'm on line I'd be more than happy to do a search for you or anyone else.

I find that in the AM (7-9) the search works for me.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Any help is better than nothing. Yeah, the whole reason I've been off Reef Central for a long time is because it has not let me look for anything anymore for as long as I can remember. There are so many threads, and if I have a quick question - not possible. The advice was always "Do a Search before you post the same question people have asked millions of time"...but I haven't been able to do that....so I gave up...I'll try the google way; that might work. And offering to search for me/others is very nice....thanks for the offer.

just read beerguy's link to search engine answers...aaahh, so the search ability IS directly related to Premium membership...good to know.

Can you become a premium member without using PayPal yet? After a prior experience with them I WILL NOT be using PayPal for anything.

I would love to contribute, but not via PayPal.

If anyone you know uses Paypal ask them. If not, I can send via Paypal for you. I am sure RC have no problem. If interested I can pm my address and when you send me money I will pay RC.

Or just use Google (Beerguy's link also shows a direct Google-esque search page you can use):

include the string site:reefcentral.com anywhere in your search terms (eg. "coralife skimmer site:reefcentral.com") and it'll give you all the RC pages.

I tend to use that all the time just to save RC the resources even if the search is available.
