Kurt-
What are your thoughts on the Vortech? I was attracted to them, but concerned because they couldn't be angled (Nor do I think that could ever be fixed, based on the drive method); but I'm not sure that's really that big a problem..... I don't think I'm going to dump the Streams/7095, yet, but I'm thinking it'll make some nice straight-line flow.... PS Kurt- Want a few big Poci colonies? Trying to re-'scape the tank, and they need a good home..... LAXing- Take it from somebody who owns Streams, has seen Vortechs, and owns 2 Koralias (QT/Sick); the Hydors are nice, but not in the same league... -Andy/Oldimpala |

I was worried about not being able to angle them at all either, and your right you could not unless you have a hex tank but its not an issue, have not seen the Tunze operate but can only assume they provide the same kind of current.
The Vortech is about 3" across and seems to provide a stream immediately out from it of about 5" that gets broader as it travels, but there is an undercurrent coming back to the pump providing current in the opposite direction as well as hitting areas like bottom of my tank 12-14" to the right of the pump. The current is not particularly strong but water is moving along the bottom and back toward the pump with no other pumps on in the tank. I think if I did not go with a closed loop, two of these would have been enough and with the closed loop the single pump is giving me enough movement. I had bought the Koralia 4 hoping it would give me what I was looking for, its about 1/4 the water movement you get from the vortech. Andy, on the Poc's I may be interested send me some pictures. |

What exactly does the wireless wavedriver upgrade model do that the standard model can't? Without the wireless wavedriver will the Vortech run on only one constant speed or can the speed be adjusted? Assuming the speed can be adjusted... must it be manually adjusted or can it be set to vary between speeds on it's own? Can a Vortech run on a wavemeker (ie: turn on and off via power interruption) or is this a big no no? Just how close to the surface of the water can you run a Vortech? Do any of you have the Icecap battery backup?

The speed is adjusted manually with a little turn knob, it remains constant.

OK... that answers one question. Thanks!
I need answers to the rest of my questions before I go sit on Santa's lap and ask for a Vortech

I have not hooked it up to a DC8 yet and cycled it but not sure why I could not. It turns off and on with no problems or noise.
I do not have the power backup but have battery packs I could use in an emergency. I think it suggests 6" from the surface of the water, mine are about 8 and I get quite a bit of surface disruption. When I let the water level in the system drop by turning off the return pump it gets quite busy at the top. |

Oh, I think the variable speed option of the newer controller would be a neat feature. May end up getting a second vortech and selling all the closed loop parts.

thanx for that info, Kurt.
I asked Santa for a couple of Vortechs and Santa asked me if I was F'n crazy. Needless to say, I didn't get any pictures! Sorry, Conesus_Kid. I don't think that telling Santa what I'll get will work, either. There must be another way

Gary,
I don't think you're crazy; just a little waterlogged. Have you written a letter to Santa?
