I think its really more of what you want your tank to look like. They both have there goods and bads. I have had both and I like the sand look better.

I think it would be fine. I dont think it holds enough water to bow the front. Look at the Oceanic Teck tanks. They dont have a center brace. Your 55 will be fine.

I dont think it will be to much for a 90. By the time you add in the head pressure, a few 90s in the plumbing its going to drop a lot.
