Which Dremel Model

My mom is asking me what I want for christmas, and I think I want to replace my dremel. I've got a craftsman cordless rotary tool, and one of those harbor freight $15 jobs. The craftsman isnt bad, but the ~20min battery life drives me nuts, and its really not all that powerful unless the battery is absolutely full. I'd like to get a corded one.

I was looking on amazon, and there seems to be a whole lot of different models. Which one do I want? Whats the deal?

Want to be able to do DIY jobs, cut heavy sps/lps, etc. Want a nice one.

I have several dremels, both corded and not corded. Just get anything with a cord. My cordless one is useless and ALL others are fantastic. So just find one in your price range with a cord and I'm sure you won't be dissappointed. I even had the two speed version and it is great. A really nice tool. They all work well but the cordless one's just have little to no power.

I'm thinking the XPR400. Its got the variable speeds, and it has a 2.0 Amp motor, whereas the rest seem to have 1.2 amp motors.

I have the XPR corded dremel and HATE IT!! For some reason Dremel went to a plastic thumb lock, its a piece of crap and broke on me in the first couple months. I have had mine for about a year and the motor has all but died on me. I have to tap it on my desk to get it to start. The attachments are nice for it but if I decide to get another dremel it will be the original dremel......

i bought a dremmel multipro 275 from walmart last weekend and drilled my 10o twice and a 10 gallon. It was the second cheapest they had(next to the battery operated one). Worked great for me and have used it for a multitude of things since.

YES, one big problem, I ran out of stuff to dremel after a week.

At work for fragging we have the cheapie Lithium Ion cordless ones, I like it because it is quiet. Other than that it's a piece of crap.

I like my corded one better although loud. No late night fragging in my house.

Hrm, trying to decide between Dremel, and a Rotozip at this point. I use it for fragging, but also for stuff like cutting PVC, cutting acrylic, cutting other random stuff...cutting glass...etc.

i have a corded older model, so recently i got this one:
http://www.dremel.com/en-US/tools/to...4&I=69808#kits

It works great for fragging and i used it to cut the cf rod in the mjmods, it seems to go a while between charges, and the pistol grip sets it apart.

can you cut glass with a rotozip?

i have used one and it seems like it would be a bit too rough to be able to do that.

Anthony, rotozips smoke holes in glass, way more torque. not so great for general purpose DIYing IMO.
Rich I like the 300 series like the 395x-x (x's represent whatever kit is bundled with the 395) The 400 series is just overpriced and have quality issues. Be sure to get the new ez lock attachment for cutting wheels, these are awesome!!

Everybody on my family has one. I think combined, we have used them 10 times in 5 years. Never found much use for one... ohh and my grandfather was a dentist.. I have dental drills and burs out the wazoo.. They fit the dremel also. Still only use the thing once in a blue moon.

Lowes was having a sale on this model dremel for 29.97 depending on your zipcode. Its regular 59.97 and if you fall in the right zipcode it will drop to 29.97 for store pickup. I picked up 2 about 30 miles from my house as the deal wasn't good at my local store. Don't know why zipcode decides it but it makes it 50% off......Just change the Zip on the page to your area or one nearby to find out. It came off the slickdeals site and think was posted here on RC at one time too.
