Iodine Dip
For a Dip - Kent's Lugol's Solution says 40 drops to 1 gallon & 1 drop per 25 gallons weekly as a supplement. Is this the concentration you guys are using as a dip/additive?
Can you use the medical Lugol's Iodine solutions, they seem to be less expensive, but are they the same? Lugol's (Sodium) Iodine 1 fl. oz. Packed in a clear HDPE bottle with dropper. I dont add too much iodine to my system. Iodine is present in foods you feed. In my experience adding to much will be toxic, test first!!! Unfortunately most iodine tests are a ***** to use and read. But test before you add. If you do regular monthly 20% water changes, and feed, you should be ok. If you choose to add, use it sparingly. For dips...I use 15 drops per Litre of sea water from the tank. Use a frag tub, (tupperware/gladware tub), use this only for dips! I use a bottled water bottle to measure the water volume. Most 'aquafina' bottles are 500ml, so I use to of those to take water from the tank, to quickly measure out a litre of tank water, put 10-15 drops of iodine, mix, and place coral to be dipped in the solution for 15 minutes. (this is used as a precaution measure to disinfect new or wild corals. LPS dont handle this dip to well. or clams either. Acroporas dont mind at all. I also place flat work exit, in the dip at the same time, This will kill any flatworms, and parasites from your new corals. Receding or RTN'ing corals can also be dipped to disinfect. I never dip healthy existing corals from my system. (if it aint broke dont fix it), but always dip any new coral, whether from a friends tank, or shop, or from wild, remember!!!... most parasites are not visible to the naked eye, and never assume new corals are clean from little hitchhikers. Hope this helps man

Like Coralmkr1 said, regular water changes usually replenish iodine sufficiently. If you don't do reg changes (like me) or have a kickin' skimmer, some supplimental iodine can be good. I add it for my xenia, they thrive on it. Even so, I add one drop weekly to my 100g tank instead of four. UNLESS you have an iodine test kit and test readily, be very conservative with dosing.
