Unhappy my clown committed suicide today

It is a sad day in the Ford home today.

My 15 year old daughter says whats under the coffee table. we move the table and there she is my female clown fish all dried out. Apparently she jumped out of the tank and flip flopped half way across the room. I keep the water level fairly high, but I never could have imagined this happening. The male seems OK, but they were such a happy couple. I am not sure what I can do to prevent this in the future. The lights sit on the edge of the tank the CPR HOB refugium & PS hang on the edge of the tank.

The irony to the story is we named the clowns Coral and Marlin. We never did get any eggs, but now Coral is gone. Now we will never have a Nemo

On the bright side she did not die in the tank so the water parameters are still spot on.

John

Oh man thats horrible. Im sorry to hear that, I would be upset too if I lost my female clown.

Do you have a host anemone? My pair do not stray to far away from theirs, only during feeding time. If you dont then you might want to add one to prevent another from jumping in the future. Just an idea.

Jordan(Pico1) I think has one he wanted to trade off.....

But Clowns are not known to jump really, so it could be an isolated event.

I got the pair used, and they never had a anemone, so they were hosting on a pump in their old tank. When they settled in they started hosting on one of my powerheads. kind of odd, but they seemed happy. Until today that is.

"But Clowns are not known to jump really, so it could be an isolated event."

I have had 5 clowns all end up on the floor. I don't see anything about that "isolated". To the best of my knowledge, they ARE jumping fish.

It's never good when fish jump ship...

magdelan,

I must be tired the first time I read your interests line I swear I thought it said "cooking my pets". I had to do a double take twice, I missed the coma all together.

I'm going to bed now,

John

I got 2 clowns in a gbta and they havent jumped ship

If you have had 5 clown jump ship, you gotta ask "What was making them jump" more then likely another fish was harassing them.

Nu2SW, I agree with you if 5 have jumped ship something is scaring them. I have 2 tomato clowns and they do not stray far from their anenome. I have only had 1 fish jump ship and that was my sixline wrasse (Bummer). I know what happened though. My 3 year old woke up in the middle of the night and decided to go downstairs and look at the fishies with her flashlight. I think she spooked it as I found it on the floor behind the tank the next day..

Yeah I have been meaning to get some egg crate.

Top plastic has egg crate that is covered in like some sort of reflective material.

All fish except seahorses are capable of leaping out. It's preventable.

If you are looking for egg crate I would look at HD or Lowes. I would think that they would beat the pants off of Taps...
