I was trying to dig up an old thread that I think it was mihn that posted a pretty good deal on a dell.
Anyways, a good friend of mine is looking for a new desktop and thought I would see if I could dig up that old coupon. Who even knows if its still valid. Anyways, TIA! |

Don't forget to run the Dell De-Crapifier Tool.
This tool is awsome, I use it when ever a friend gets a new dell http://www.yorkspace.com/2006/04/38 ~Steve~

Hey AC - PM me what you want. What do you want to use it for? What is your goal? Do you want the least expensive system or something mid-grade? I personally tend to buy low end system and replace it more often. Some people prefer to purchase the nicest system possible - but replace it less often. Give me more details and I will try to help. Sometimes it takes a little while to find a good deal.

"Reinstall Windows with a store bought version" - Why? Why pay $100+ dollars more for the store bought version. It is perfectly fine to reinstall it with the OEM version of Windows. The OEM version does not install extra junk on the machine.
To be honestly - my staff reformat and reinstall all computers we purchase at work. I like to know exactly what software are installed and running on my computer. But realistically - most users don't have the expertise to do that on their own. The tool that Steve gave is an interesting tool. I have never used it, so I can't comment on how well it works. I don't like how it removes the McAfee security software though. If you do run that tool, make sure you reinstall some sort of antivirus software. Also - make sure you update your computer and antivirus. Between Dell and Gateway - I would go with Dell. IME, Gateway has great customer support. However, they tend to use the cheapest component possible. Dell make great machines. However, customer support is not always great. I strongly recommend people not order from Dell's Home Division. They have the worst customer support. I order all my Dell computers through Dell Small Business or Dell Educational Division. Some people may recommend building your own computer. That's a great alternative if you have the experience and technical background to support it. I don't build machines for friends or family anymore because when I did, I ended up being their tech support for their 7 year old machine that they spent $3K on, and don't know why they need to upgrade. *sigh* As far as sites with deals, here are some worth checking out: http://www.gotapex.com/ http://www.bensbargains.net/ http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/ http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdi...hp?sduid=0&f=9 The first site post deals about Dell all the time. Be cautious though because some of the deals aren't the best you can get. If you're willing to play the waiting game and do a little research, the last two sites are pretty good. Minh Quote:

Very true, dell has very bad customer support Consumer Reports did a study and out of a 100 dell got a score of 68 with gateway at 72 and :-) of course you know who at like 89 or 90.
I had a compaq and when i put the oem version on, All the crap came back. Maybe dell doesnt do that. thats why i recmommend a retail version. ASlo very true building computers for friends and family you do end up there tech support. MY mother in law calls me all the time. OH na yes they put carp on there desktop... LOL see what I get for not checking my typing... LOL Dells are Great PC computers, But like minh and me say, Reformat it. If you need help, I could help you. Its pretty easy. On the other hand... If you want great tech support and great customer service and a great computer... APple has a desktop starting at 599 with the intel, only thing is you need a monitor ,since it doesnt come with one and notebooks start at 1099. *Hey I gotta help my company stock go up* haha :-) Quote:

One thing to be careful of when reloading the O/S is there may be dell drivers that aren't on your Windows CD. I recently got a Dimension but let them ship it without the XP Pro upgrade because I already had a copy from the computer I was replacing. What complicated things a bit was that my copy of XP didn't have suitable sound, video or network drivers for the new box. Seems like you couldn't load them from the Dell CD w/o re-installing the Dell o/s. Anyway, it's easy enough to go get the right drivers from the Dell website, but -- not when one is your network driver . I had to install a wireless driver from another system so I could get internet access in order to download/install the Dell driver for the onboard NIC as well as the sound/video drivers. FWIW, I've had pretty good luck with Dell's customer support, but I do buy the extended support package. They actually sent someone to our house to replace the LCD on our Inspiron when it failed.
The funny part of that story is that it was my gf's laptop and her wallpaper is a picture she took of me. She wasn't there, so the tech assumed it was my machine. It wasn't until he had it running for a few minutes that I went around and realized he was staring at an extreme closeup of my face, at which point I mentioned to him whose machine it really was. His response was, "Oh, ok. I was thinking, man, this guy really likes himself ..."

With electronics, its best to get something like an extended warranty. You never know when there gonna go, and if you never used it then its been long enough to replace it. If anything is gonna happen its gonna happen just out of warranty.... Karma it sucks.
