Heres er and asm side by side looking the same to me and with an air meter they pull the same amount of air.Only real performace difference is the er is 8 inches while the asm is 6 wide

ER is built better.

I have an 8-2 that I just upgraded the Sedra 5000 pump to a GenX4100 (SP4). The pump did not come with the air line, so I used the one off the Sedra 5000. The problem is that it is trying to suck so much air that the tube makes a loud whine all the time. Also, skimmate production is worse than before replacing the pump. Does anyone know if the GenX4100s use a larger inside diameter air line tubing than the Sedra 5000s? If so, where could I get the replacement hose?

I'm having an issue with my "older" ES 6-1 (almost 2 1/2 years old). Bought it new, it has always worked great but lately seems to be making less bubbles / foam, almost like it isn't getting enough air. Impeller was replaced about 6 months ago, entire skimmer is cleaned every month and pump soaked in vinegar. This morning I cleaned the cup again, and made sure there was nothing obstructing the air flow. (If I put my finger over the end of the air tube the suction doesn't seem as strong as I remember it being in the past)
There is an obvious line between the bubbles in the top 1/2 of the cup, and the mostly water with a few bubbles in the lower 1/2 of the cup. (Hard to see in the photo, indicated area with red lines)
[IMG][/IMG]

Do the pumps themselves just wear out within this time frame ? (It's a Sedra 3500) Any other suggestions ? Thanks.

(By the way - I add nothing to the tank except Randy's 2 part. No new additions, epoxy, etc. I can pretty much rule out anything in the water causing this)

What do the n/w's in the new SP4 and SP5 pumps look like? Are they bicycle spoke design or pinwheel (like sedras)

They are Pinwheel style.

David8956,

I suggest you try reaming out the Venturi with a drill bit that JUST fits inside the Venturi hole. I believe 1/8" will do the trick. If you don't see an increase in performance, I suggest you consider replacing the impeller assembly or at least the magnet. If you have not tried soaking the impeller kit in PURE vinegar, try that for 24hrs and see if it helps. If there is ANY build up of Calcium Carbonate on the shaft or bearings it will affect pump and thus skimmer performance.

clkwrk,

You can do a mod to your 8-2 that will improve it's performance. You can also upgrade the pump to the new SP4 and it will more than double the current air intake and performance.

JFish180,

You need to get a new airline hose. The old style has a smaller ID and will do just what you describe as well as limit the air intake causing the pump to pump draw less air, more water and thus create more turbulence which will decrease skimming efficiency. Any of our dealers can order you a new airline kit which includes a control valve.
