Identifying healthy and unhealthy clams at LFS
Hey all,
There is an LFS near my house which as about 6 maxima and crocea clams at for around 50 bucks. Some of them appear to be gapping and these are the ones that have been there three months, the others which are new look in good heath but at the same time this LFS does not keep things up to par. I do not trust a lot of their livestock but at the same time probably my tank would give them a better hope compared to some of the other people with NO lighting and a tank that is recently cycled. The lights the clams are under are a mix of VHO and NO lighting. I am thinking about playing a rescue game with one of the croceas there. He is about 4 inches and appears to be gapping. So having said all this I want to know how I can identify clams that are healthy and ones that are unheathy. Also the different methods to acclimate them to my stronger lighting and how to get them back to proper health given the problems they have. Thanx in advance for any help |

If the clams are starved there in the LFS and are looking back, don't hope that you can rescue it by transfering to your own tank, the chances of it coming back alive is slim.

Sorry I should clarify,
I don't have much expertise at identifying the problems. I am assuming what I saw at the LFS was a gapping clam, but I have not had to many chances to observe it firsthand. Therefor, probably if someone had a picture of a gapping clam or clams showing other signs of poor health, it would help me decide if I made the right assumptions. I just want to know how I can make sure that those clams are showing signs of poor health. Sorry about that |

again you already did. 3 month with substandard lighting alone will make them very weak and a big risk. advise your LFS to keep there clams under MH lighting, and when they do, think about getting a clam from them

Do not get the clams to rescue them, you will only be putting another clam in that clams place, instead get the clams because you want them.
