Question 10-20g nano reef on bookcase?

I'm thinking about setting up a 10-20g nano reef for someone but the spot they picked out is on the top of a bookcase.. I'm not sure if it'll be able to support the tank.. its 50 inches long and 13 inches deep... i think the bookcase will begin to bend and not be able to take the weight of the tank with water, sand, and live rock in it...

otherwise there would be no problem setting it up for him... let me know what you think...

and also if you know any small and fairly inexpensive stands for a 10-15 gallon tank let me know...

thanks

I have no idea how strong the case is but I wouldn't try it. Spend $20-$50 on a good tank stand or make one yourself.

plus i thought about making wooden supports on the shelf underneath to support the tank weight above on top... would this maybe work out?

Why not just get something much heavier then the tank and sit it on the top and see what happens... if it doesnt move at all then I am sure it would be fine. If it bows or breaks (haha you will be in ****) then no dont do it.

And with all the dripping and wet messes I make while in my tank --- I wouldn't want that on top of something with books underneath.

this is very true... i don't think he realized how much more he'd have his hands in this tank setting it up than in his freshwater.. so i dont think he'd want his books to get wet

I've got my 12g nanocube on a big end table that only cost $20. My rule was that if it could hold me (big guy) it could hold a small tank.

yeah but tanks can get pretty heavy... but yeah i think im going to put in pieces of wood for support on each shelf in the middle

(like take out 2 books, 1 from each shelf and replace it with a measured piece of wood to support the middle down the the floor)
