Your question is difficult to give a difinitive answer to because there are many variables involved. SPS corals have a wide variety of lighting needs. Some need only moderate light to excel and others need very high light to excel. The other problem is watts per gallon is a relative term. If you hang a 250w MH bulb over 90 gallon tank that is 30 inches tall the corals in the middle and bottom of the tank will receive a lot less light then the corals on the top. If you hang the same light over a 90 gallon tank that is only 18 inches tall your corals will receive a lot more light over all even though both tanks have the same watts per gallon. The height of the bulbs off of the water and the type of ballasts, bulbs and reflectors play a big role in how much light the corals receive as well. Long story short, the size and depth of your tank and the corals you plan to keep (very high lighting needs, moderate lighting needs, etc) should determine the amount of light that you put over the tank. thanks for the help....
this is what Im thinking...
a 250 watt HQI coralife pendant over a 20 gallon tank. I think its 30 x 12 x12 inches.
Would I keep the pendant fairly close to the waters surface?

That would be good lighting, but you will find that you will have to keep the light very high off the water, which is still fine. 250's get hot, and over a 20 gallon, you will have some serious heat issues (if you dont have a chiller). But that is fine, I have seen a 250 over a 20 gallon alot of times. I personally had a 175 over my old 20 and it did just fine.

250's would be fine in your 20g. Just be sure to have that light high above the surface of the water to avoid a high evaporation rate and heat issue.
