Not the look I would want to go for in my tank but more power to you for a dedicated clam tank.

Having visited Jim's last weekend to get some of his baby maxima's, I have no doubt they'll be fine. Jim is a very knowledgable clam expert and I only wish I could of spent a lot longer time there learning all about these beautiful creatures. How is everything doing, Jim?? My baby maxima is doing awesome as is the larger sparkle turquoise patter maxima. You should see his 120g and 65g. show tanks.

Jim:
Looking at your clam tank makes me feel stoooopid for giving away a 45g.cube tank.A missed chance to do a clam tank! It's getting real crowdy in my 110 for my clams.Congrads again and good luck to you. P.S.I'm gonna try to call my LFS and see if I can get my tank back. |

i can tell jim knows what he's doing right off the bat. derasas, squamosas and hippopus' are lower light clams that live on the sand. this corresponds with his set-up and lighting. very nice species tank. how about that hippopus - do you have a close up of that sucker? plan on upgrading to MH and keeping Maximas and Croceas in there? cheers, pathos

Sue---hello! I am now hooked on SPSs too! You are a rascal for doing that to me! I will be coming to Houston to see you. I will bring some clams and empty bags for frags!
Zenya--Yes I had this tank just sitting and was using it to cure liverock but I think it makes a great clam tank. Ioui--The tank is only acouple of weeks old but I did not explain well that the sand was setting in tanks some over two years old. Also the liverock is several months to a year old sitting in the same tanks. And clams are different that most creatures of the sea. They actually filter out nirate, nitrite and ammonia. Some people are doing experiments with clams as filters in their sumps. In my case the sump would be on top and the tank would be below because I like clams. Also in clam farms ammonium nitrate is use to enhance the grow of clams. This is fertilizer! The only fish I have in the tank is a yellow tank. A sixline wrasse is on the way. Hope this helps alittle. Two more pictures just taken of the BIG hippopus and a 6 incher on its way to a new home. |

Jim, ahhh, you can't blame that on me. These sps corals are going to be like clams, you just can't have only 1.
You load up and guess what... you don't need to bring the bags. I got bags and frags. I'm so glad the frags are doing good for you. I thought they would. my 180 ecosystem sps tank: http://berlinmethod.com/suet/ my 120 ecosystem sps tank: http://suetruett.homestead.com/home.html www.marshreef.org/members |

Re: Were the BIG clams play!
Hello Jim, that is very nice. I remember seeing that Hex when Sue and I visited you last weekend. I know you said it was for the Big Clams! That is very nice. My baby maximus are doing well. I wish Sue and I could have spent more time and absorbed more info on Clams. Hopefully we will see you again. Holly

HI ALL,
since it appears that you all are clam experts, i have a question. I have a 55gallon that is almost a year old. 4-5" DSB, 50#LR, 2 175W 10KK MH lighting. the setup is doing great, with the exception of some lingering nitrates. the levels have dropped finally to around 30 mg/L after a very large recent water change. I read here that nitrates are actually beneficial to clams....and that clams may even help to lower overall nitrate levels. Is this the case? will my 30 mg/L nitrate levels hurt or help the clam?? I am not buying one of these beautiful creatures only to kill it. thanks guys!! --Drew
