Is $30 for 4lbs of Kalk a good deal

I saw this ad on Ebay for kalk and I dont know much about the stuff. I will be adding it to a new Nilson reactor and I dont know if there is such a thing as good or bad kalk. Is this a waste of bad product or is it all the same?

Not really. You can buy ESV Kalk at $17 for 4lbs. at Marinedepot.com
Less hassle than dealing with ebay.

I've been using it for about 1.5 years and have been quite happy with it.

Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime can be purhased at most grocery stores for dirt cheap. You can get 5lbs. for under $7. It is the same as kalk. It may even be a purer grade, because it is a food grade.

I would have to disagree with this part. Maybe around you it can be found at grocery stores but I have not been able to find ANY pickling lime at ANY grocery store in about 4 years (last saw Ball's at Walmart about 4 years ago-not really a grocery store though).
I have been able to find it consistently online at :

We have it here in our grocery stores and WalMart. If you ever want me to pick some up and bring it by just let me know. I'm over in the Green Bay area atleast every other weekend.

Thanks. Right now though I have about 8 lb as I order it from Mrs Wages by the case. I do get up to GB occassionally so when I get lowI can just plan a trip to Wal Mart there sometime when I will be in town anyway. BTW, are you a member of the new Fox Valley Reefers Club? It started a few months ago. I just heard about it but have to miss the April meeting (next weekend). There seem to be alot of reefers in the GB/Fox cities/Oshkosh area.

I use Ball's Pickling Lime instead of Mrs. Wage (1.69 per pound). But I heard it's even better to put some Ball's in Mrs. Wages.

Ouch, I sold 28, 50 pound bags of food grade Calcium Hydroxide for 25.00 per bag last year.. This stuff is every bit as good as the stuff we buy at are LFS, maybe even better. The company I work for pays between 4 and 5 dollars a bag...

I heard that Ball's has gone out of business. I couldn't find any recent link to Ball's on a google search. Do you know something different?

I couldn't find anything either. Ball's apparently still makes cans and canning jars, but maybe they stopped producing their pickling lime. I may run down to my local redneck grocery store and buy up the rest of their stock.
