Tang for 120

I just ordered my 120 and it should be here in a week. I wanted to start looking for fish to get and I was wanting to put a tang in. What kind of tang do you recommend here. My tank is 4 ft across and i will eventually have corals in it.

Any tang will be fine, I think it is going to be a matter of color preferance. If eventually want to add 1 more then don't get a yellow. Make him the last. They tend to be nasty to new comers

Here is my Achilles that I have in my 120. They require a little more attention than the average tang, but it is a striking fish that you don't see every day. It is getting large in my tank though, and will likely need a new home soon. Whatever you choose, be sure to know what you are getting into. Some tangs get enormous and are too big for a 120 the moment you introduce them. Others are very delicate and you have to provide them with pristine conditions.

Yellow = yes
Powder Blue = no

The Powder Blue is much like the Achilles where there are more stories of failed attempts than successes. They are sensitive to water quality, tank size, and especially other tank mates. It is a VERY mean fish (the last one I had attacked EVERYTHING - clowns, chromis, bangaii, etc.) and gets stressed out chasing everything around. If you are new to tangs, this one is not a good one to learn on.

If you are concerned about them growing too large.. keep your eyes open fora Tomini Tang. They are the smallest of the tangs and quite nice to look at IMO. I have only ever seen one. Seems to be rarer than my black tang at the LFS I shop at. As well the Tomini's are a bristletooth like the Kole and Chevron. Great algae controllers.

I'd grab one if another appeared..

DJ88 - I just looked up that tomini tang on LiveAquaria and it looks like a cool fish to have. I've never seen it before, so I was curious if anyone had a picture of one in their tank.

I would like to get in on this as well as I'm planning on getting a tang for my 125. I know about the agressiveness of the purple. They're pretty hardy right? You guys think my other fish would be OK with one? I have a royal gramma, a damsel (wusS) and two chromis. Or would the purple harass them?

DJ, do you think a purple tang would be too aggressive for the fish I have listed in my above post? Thanks

I have seen some pretty cranky purples. Especially in a tank the size you are looking at if there are other tangs. They do seem to have a bit more of a toughguy attitude than other tangs but I can't say that ALL of them are like that.. I don't see that it would bother the fish you currently have.. But in the future.. I generally told customers to put a purple in last. And then try not to add more fish after that the purple may see as competition for space or food.

This is the difficult part of the hobby.. You won't know until you put the fish in there. I know that one. I have a pink spot goby that goes after EVERYTHING in my tank. yeah.. a goby.. this thing is a brute. It has taken shots at everything at one time or another. He's coming out as soon as I can make a trap for it.

Dj, well I can say that I may get one more fish before the purple in the 125. So if I do decide on the purple it will definately be the last fish. Thanks
