If you are talking about all cameras, the D1H Nikon is a really well liked camera at about 3 MP. If you are talking about consumer cameras at a much lower price point, there are lots of good options out there. I prefer sticking with Olympus, Canon, and Nikon. Fuji makes a good camera as well.

You may want to check out the reviews and comparisons at www.dpreview.com .

Regards,

Perry

If the camera is for taking tank pictures, you would want one that can take good macro shots. nikon 4500 is 4 MP and as far as I've seen, it takes the best, I mean the best by far (Of course excluding SLR cameras), macro shots. The camera is 2 years old and has been discontinued. But you might be able to find some good deal on ebay. In general, nikon cameras are known to take good macro shots. Like PerryinCA said, check dpreview.com
If you want to see what 4500 can do, here's the link.

If you are talking the best point and shoot camera in the 3mp range I would say it is the Fuji s602Z. My daughter has one and it is a great camera. It will take both Compact Flash and Smart Media. It has a 6x zoom and has great macro capabilities. The Fuji CCD is also much better than most of the camera's. I'm currently shopping for the Fuji s7000 for my wife. It is what replaced the s602Z with the main difference being the ability to use a standard sync cord when on a tripod and it uses XD instead of Smart Media. Having said all that, I sure love my Digital Rebel!

Yeah, I got S7000 recently for $424 after rebate. It's 6mp camera and I love it. It's definatley worth the price. If you want to see what that camera can do, you can check out my gallery. I'm new at taking photos, but pictures came out pretty decent. I think instead of putting limit to how many mega pixels, you should limit to how much you are willing to spend. JMO.

That's a pretty tight budget. Mostly a snapshot type camera is all you will get with that. I had the Fuji A200 (2mp) and it is a very good camera with excellent picture quality. Quick (focus free).

Another good camera I just got (for my daughter) is the Kodak CX6200 (2mp for 100 smackers). Its now been replaced with the Kodak CX7300 with 3.2mp - looks good for about 130 at Wal-Mart.

Whatever you do, don't get an off-name brand in this range, there are lots of really crappy cameras out there at around 150.

By snapshot, I ment a camera that does not offer much creative control. Pretty much only point and shoot.

For 150 bucks you won't find one that autofocuses. They are all fixed focus cameras. What does this mean? Unless you are too close to your subject, every photo will be in-focus from like 1m to infinity. In macro mode, you can focus as close as 0.5m.

I don't know if you will get the quality of photos you want with these types of cameras. They have very limited feature sets. If I were you, I would buy from wal-mart or something (not Best Buy or Circuit City because you can't return digital cameras at these places). All of the brands you mentioned are good.

Also remember that when you buy a camera, you still also have to buy the memory for it.

I'll take some pics of my reef tank with my daughter's Kodak and post a sample for you. It will give you an idea of what to expect with these types of cameras.

You might be better off waiting and saving up.

i think best buy is overpriced anyways, you mean to tell me if you buy a camera and you dont like the way it takes pics they wont let you return it? all the more reason not to shop there

Yeah, 0.5m is a bit far. These cameras usually don't do macros too well. That's why I think for reef shots, you need to increase your camera budget. Check out the Nikon Coolpix 3200 it looks like it may fit your bill for a bit more than 200. It can focus as close as 4cm.

Best Buy & Circuit City will take the camera back but will only give you 85% of your money back. They keep the rest for "restocking fees" - not a return if you ask me... To me "return" means you give back in the condition you got it, and they give you back what you gave for it.

there wasn't review for nikon 3200, but I found review for nikon 3100. disappointing macro focus.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikoncp3100/page11.asp

This camera can get pretty close, but the focus ability is a bit week. only focused in the center, and very blurry all corners. It might sever what you are looking for though.

oh i see now, the specs on dp list macro focus, i take it the smaller the number the better it is for taking tank shots since they are mostly close up? i see most of em are 10cm , why is this?
