Question Diversity in Sand Bed - Annual Trade!

A lightbulb just went off:

How about a national sand trade?

Everyone sends 2 cups of their sand (NO FLATWORMS!!!) via priority mail to a centralized location - for instance, me.

I would mix all of the sand together and send you back 2 cups of sand (hopefully from 50 or more sources).

Cost would be the priority mail charge to me ($3.85 - flat rate) and the cost back to you ($3.85 - flat rate). (So total cost about $7.70) The coast to coast travel time is 2 days.

I'm suggesting and volunteering for this for absolutely no reason other than it's a pretty neat idea.

I think part of the "deep sand base" issue is the diversity. It's probably helpful to do your local sand trades - but what if you could get a little bit of sand from 50 or more people all over the country?

If you're interested - post yes and bump this up. If there's enough interest, we'll do it.

If a mod agrees that it's a neat idea - a sticky would be cool.

Wow James,

What a great idea - I'm in for 2 cups!

Suprised nobody thought of this sooner....

-Hmmmm,well I think the intention is good but I don't think it would work without considering ratios of grain sizes, this is how you keep diversity.
I beleive this is a key in how long a sediment is stay functioning in one reef and not in another.

So by your rationale, all 50 people have the same size grains? Not sure where you're going with this.

Shouldn't really matter what size sand anyone has anyway, crushed coral or real fine...we're only talking about 2 cups here and I doubt I'd even notice where it went once I poured it in.

Sounds great to me. However I have a new sand bed in a 75 with the aged sand from my 30 plus some from LFS. I need some more diversity.

I can see it now, we all have to revise our profiles to add "sandbed from NC, WA, IO, CA, FL, MN, MA, and Canada"

-No not at all.I don't think it matters .What matters is the type of sediment they can survive in.

Lets say you add two cups of a mixed sediment with a fairly rich diversity of life.Do you think it would stay that way in a reef tank where the sediment is 98.9% southdown or crushed coral?

You can add what ever you want but it doesn't mean it can survive if the environment isn't ideal.

However, even if 1% of it survives/adapts your diversifying your sandbed.
Worth the risk imo.

Ok - I see where you're going.

I'm not an expert on the effects of grain size on survivability of micro and macro infauna so I won't comment further.

All I know is that I significantly increased the diversity of my sandbed by doing a few local trades. Doing a mass trade across the country couldn't hurt.
