Book Advice for my new Digital Rebel

I was fortunate enough to find a CompUSA store that still had a Canon Digital Rebel in stock and picked it up this weekend. So far I've just messed around with it enough to figure out that I have no clue how to use it. Thank god it has that auto setting to it or I wouldn't have taken any decent pictures.
I need advice on what book or books I should start out reading. I've taken a few pictures with a cheap point and shoot digital before but have zero experience with 35mm SLR photograhy. F-stops, aparture, exposure, all that jazz. I need to learn the basics in great detail especially as it pertains to our hobby and macro shots, etc.
Any advice on what would be a great first book? I'm more interested in photography basics rather than how to touch up and edit pictures with Photoshop and the like. I want to take professional quality pictures that don't require touch up.
Any suggestions out there?

Thanks,
Trent

I highly recommend the books by John Shaw, especially these two:

Close ups in Nature
And
John Shaw's nature photography field guide.

If you get both, some of the info will be redundant- but you'll need to re-read the info several times anyway to get a good understanding of exposure, etc. I have found both of these books to be infinitely helpful, they nursed me down the path of SLR photography to be sure.

Here's the link to the books at Amazon:

Boy I haven't read those in years! I totally agree! John did an excellent job in both those books! I may just have to see if I can find them and read them again

Thanks for the info guys, any more recommendations just bring em on. I'm in sponge mode trying to soak up everything right now.
I picked up John Shaw's nature photography field guide last night and in just a few pages I've learned a lot. Also learned I have a lot more to learn, kinda like reef keeping, always more to learn.

Thanks again everyone,
Trent
