How evil are bristol worms?

I hope I spelled that right. Anyway, what harm can they do? Ive seen a couple in my sandbend and some on my live rock. Are they bad?

I can’t think of a reason they would be bad.

people have different opinions. They are evil if you try to handle them! They may airate your sandbed and have other benifits but you don't want an epidemic. In the ocean, they get really huge and can be quite distructive. I suspect that the majority will say no big deal. I hate the critters but do not have a sand bed.

Spelled 'bristle'.

They are pretty much harmless (and generally 'good' for your tank). They really only become a problem if they get really, really big. Most don't, though.

Exodus pretty much hit on what I've heard. .both on these boards, in the Ask Dr Shimek, and elsewhere. . mine all seem quite well, and actually stay just under my under-gravel filter, or right above it. I never see them even emerge from the bottom. . .

But I've heard that if they get REALLY big, they POSSIBLY could be an issue. . but mine's close to 1' long now. .and nothing.

Just don't grab them! Those bristles hurt! (so I've heard)

Oh yeah, I can vouch for thos bristle worm stings. You may not feel them when they first happen, but you know it the next day. Feels like a tiny thorn in your finger that you can't get out. To be honest, they really are not that bad. (Or maybe I have gotten used to the occasional sting.)

I have heard that they can kill some fish. I have had them and tried to catch them as I found them. I had a FOWLR though. And I did have a couple of fish perish but not sure why. They multiplied like rabbits in my tank. I have also heard of one getting to 8 feet in another persons tank. I think I read that it was in the sump lines. But this might be just a real good Fib.

When I feed my tank hundreds come out. I bought a foxface lo, 6 line wrasse, peppermint shrimp, cleaner shrimp. they are supposed to eat bristle worms.

the only reason a bristle will kill a fish, or anything for that matter, is if it is already doing poorley.. they are scavengers, not hunters.. on the other hand, if you get a very big one, they might be tempted to do some damage if there not getting enough food to support there diet...
