Question Bristle Worms

I was looking for some info on bristle worms - seems some people like to have them and some don't.

I bought 30 pounds of live rock today at Sherman Tanks, and noticed a worm inside the rock.

Should I try to get them out - or just let them be?

IMO, bristle worms are good scavengers and unless you are extremely unlucky and get the bad ones, they are harmless.

I think they are good to a point. They multiply quickly and need to be "thinned out" occasionally.

bristle worm populations only grow to numbers that the food supply will support....same with pods and most other critters that come in as freebies

Thumbs down

If you see a really huge one(over 6 inches), take it out. The small ones are great for scavengers, but I had a big one that almost ate my mandrian. I've also seen larger bristle worms in my tank eat smaller bristle worms and after a while I only had a population of giant bristle worms.

I agree with fighter, if you get them in plauge proportions, its usually a sign you have so much for them to eat that they multiply too quickly. Unless your tank requires these massive feedings, like Hemmie's, you can cut back feedings and the population should adjust accordingly.
Arrow crabs (not always totally reef safe) 6 or 8 line wrasse will eat them.
Some have reported peppermint shrimp will eat them, although i have never witnessed this in my tank.
Watch for the occasional large worm, which may or may not be a true "bristle worm".
Check out this thread and Hemmie's bristleworms!!

freakyreef........ thanks for reference thread (ick!)
I don't think the worm I saw was a bristle worm after all.
It was darker and more smooth.
