Unhappy potassium iodide solution color

Hi Mr Randy,
This is first time I post in this forum and I write to you for a simple question, in fact I'd like to know what's potassium iodide solution color? Is it red or colorless (like water)? because I've always used a red KI solution, but today a friend of mine told me that KI solution is colorless not red, and what I thought of being KI is only BrI2.
Can you, please, tell me what the true color of KI solution is?
Best regards,
Tiziano

Postassium iodide in solution is just like water. No color.

what I thought of being KI is only BrI2.

BrI2 is I assume a typo. What does the label say: I2 , I2.I , Br2 , BrI ? I hope it is none of those with the letters Br.

HTH

This is first time I post in this forum and I write to you for a simple question,

Welcome to the world of chemistry!

As Habib indicated, potassium iodide (KI) solutions are colorless (like water). So are iodate solutions ( like potassium iodate, KIO3).

Iodine as I2 is colored both in the solid form (dark purple, almost black), in the gas phase, reddish purple, and in solution (usually reddish to brown).

Also, as iodide solutions degrade on exposure to O2 in the air they can form some I2 and become colored.

Hi to all,
Thank you very much for your repplies, this means that up to now I've always supplement iodine in my tank instead of KI. Is it useful iodine in a SPS tank? Or is only KI useful for SPS?
Waiting for your suggestions,
Best regards,
Tiziano

While I personally don't prefer it, many folks have dosed Lugols solution that is a mixture of I- and I2. The I2 reacts with things in the water to mostly produce iodide and iodate. So in the end, you are mostly getting what those things would have given you.

Whether it is really a benefit or not to have any iodine dosing is undecided, as far as I'm concerned.
