I think wet skimming, you are pulling out saltwater with your crap. Dry skimming is just crap. I like to wet skim because it makes me feel better about how much stuff it pulls out

With wet you are more guaranteed to pull everything out, but you may also pull out salts. Dry doesn't pull out as much salt, but may not get everything. I prefer wet, but you should monitor your tanks salinity if you do so.

Is it based on the skimmer, or can you pick to skim either way on any skimmer? How can you change your skimmer from wet to dry or vice versa? Thanks.

You can wet or dry skim with any skimmer. Raising the water level in the skimmer kneck..Increasing the air flow...Different settings skim in different ways. Wet skimming doesn't take the salt out of the water,it takes more saltwater out of your tank. Then when you add more fresh top off water your salinity drops because you're replacing saltwater with fresh water.

I always used dryer skimming, but I am going to try wet for awhile and see what happens.
I have read too that pulling to much out can cause salinity to change. But over all is there a better one? I think you should just try both and see the difference in your system if any! |

Wet is less selective... you pull more out, but it is less concentrated.
Technically, you can do either with any skimmer, but certain (types of) skimmers are usually better at one or the other. I prefer wet... you get more out. I haven't really seen or heard anything that makes me think skimming wet might take beneficial things out of the tank.
