Stacking LR with PVC?

On a lot of larger tanks I see people stacking LR with PVC and eggcrate. How do you do this exactly and what are the benefits?

I did this on my 360 for a few reasons.

Behind the scenes it gives a place for the fish to go and still have swimming room, uses less rock, keeps the rock off the sand for a more secure structure and better water flow. There are a bunch of benifits.

From the front you cannot tell, from the side or back it gives you an idea of the room the fish have back there. They can swim from one front corner to the other front corner via the rockwork and not be seen by people. A second world if you will.
