Issue with Randy's 2-part!

I know that a bunch of us are using 2 part to do calcium and alk supplementation, so I thought that you should all see this thread if you haven't yet: New Randy's 2-part .

Bottomline: apparently the dowflake of recent is very high in bromine (as compared to previously when Randy developed his 2-part). It is unknown the effect on reef tanks yet, so this may be a false alarm. However, the levels are outrageously different (NSW=67ppm, new dowflake = up to 8,000ppm).

A suitable alternative is still being located, however Randy is only "consulting" on this one. Just as an FYI - the prestone driveway heat is also affected by this...

The dowflake produced under the new method was made after December '06, and people are still getting the old stuff. If the lot code on the bag of dowflake had a "U" or a "PC" in it, or a production date after 12/06, then it was produced with potentially higher bromine levels.

I am going to call the supplier that I use and see if they have any flake with the safe lot number code on it.
If they do I may be buying a pallet of the stuff.

Otherwise apparently 2partsolution.com has stockpiled the "good" dow flake, and will be able to provide supply for a good long while as well...

They are sold out of the 2 gallon and 5 gallon bulk of dow flake calcium chloride 77-80%. They do have some 1 gallon left. They do have the high purity calcium chloride purduced in 2006.
Does anyone know the difference between the 2?

From what ive read, some company use to buy the bromine off them, so they refined there product to take the bromine out. Since the company stopped buying the bromine off them, they stopped refining it out of the CaCl.

The mag flake seems to be ok still, and baking soda will always be available, so in a worse case scenario, we will have to buy regular Ca supp and DIY the Mg and Alk

Or if we keep up with Co2 admissions, Calcium reactors should work down the road with no Co2 tank needed
