Aquascaping with Lego bricks
Has anyone had any experience using Lego bricks instead of PVC tubing for their aquascaping. The Lego bricks are made of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
To make the Lego bricks construction more solid, I will have to glue the bricks. What type of glue shall I use? Thanks for your inputs. |

Sounds to me like a lot of places for water to sit in stagnant pockets. I would not try it.

I dont think it will make that big of a deal the stagnant water. Kind of like a plenum, anaerobic bacteria will inhabit it. It would suck though to have your nitrates go through the roof and have to dismantel the leggos. Its interesting, I'd like to see how if it works.

I would think if you glued them together you wouldnt get stagnant water pockets.... the top of the legos would breed bacteria well. Weld-on for the glue???? That would be my guess.

Legos are pretty small, I would use the bigger blocks that are sold for toddlers if anything. I can't imagine how many legos and how long it would take to make a large structure. I'm not sure they would hold weight well either.

Now I want to go build a Lego reef! You could use grey for the rock, reds, greens and yellows for the corals, how fun would a Lego FOWLR made to look like a reef be? What a great kid's tank that would make...
 Let us know how it turns out. I agree with weld-on or epoxy for the 'glue', either should work well.

Pffff, K'nex are where it's at. You could build a huge support structure to hold LR in different/cool ways and their's strong enough (maybe not for say a 20lb rock), but for like rock walls or ledges, unlimited possibilities.

Thats a great idea... I would think it would be reef safe... I would be concerned about not having water circulate through the structure..

Based on your first post you want to use Lego instead of PVC. I assume that you don't want it to be visible. Lego is expensive compared to PVC...why don't you just use what is tried and true.....unless you have a lot of Legos already.

If you built more of an arch type structure than a dome it would prevent stagnant water. Sort of like a hemisphere with no legos on the inside and spaces for some water to flow through. I dont know that this would be able to hold rock, which would be a problem.

Someone should send this idea into those people who make huge structures out of legos. Forgot who they are. I saw it on tv once though.

i actually was mulling the idea of mounting frags on lego blocks.
then sticking the blocks on one of those large base sheets. seems like a pretty efficient way of packing frags, yet keeping them easily moveable. then I decided not to

Thank you very much for all your valuable inputs. I am considering a 34g tank and thought that PVC tubing was taking too much space to build a support for live rock. Should I go with lego, I will let you know and send some pics. Talk to you soon. Sevyreef

You could leave out a block every once in a while and water could flow right through it.
