reducing skimmate smell
My skimmer has been giving off a worse than normal smell. Is there anything i can put in the collection cup to make it smell a little less. I was thinking about maybe using carbon or something.

I keep a couple filter bags filled with carbon on top my collection cup it helps out alot.

The carbon will definitely help, but you should really be cleaning it out every couple days anyway. Skimmers don't work as well with gunked up necks and it generally doesn't take very long for that to happen.

If the none of the above ideas/solutions work you can always install a small carbon air scrubber with a squirrel cage fan in your fish room or wherever its located.

I read somewhere to put a small amount of bleach in the bottom of your collection cup when you clean it. As long as it doesn't overflow it shouldn't be a problem.

how much baking soda would you put in? do you just sprinkle it around the collection cup?

You can also put a bit of kalk powder or pickling lime (assuming you drip kalk) into the cup. This helps as well.
I'll have to try the baking soda approach. |
