$500 anemone??
Atlantis is selling yellow tipped roses for $500! who pays that much for that? they have the same ones in san mateo for $150 and they're like 5-7" open. i think 500$ is a bit much. cool anemone though.

Its got to be a one off color morph, so the "value" is higher, since the demand is "higher" so to speak. Its also quite "LARGE" but 500, wow I have seen similar for $65 Everyday at my LFS regardless of size.

Also just about every picture looks especially vibrant.. *cou20000kbulbsgh* *couphotoshoppinggh*... not to say the colors aren't there... but lets just say you put the infamous "browneye palythoas" under enough blue/actinic light they'll glow green.

Minimal photoshopping, I'd say.
The website does say 400 watt 20k plus actinics. 400 watters make for some awesome colors in the systems I've seen. |

hehe Karl, yeah I know, it had to be said, but I also did toss in the disclaimer that I'm not saying it's that color! Besides I'm not saying the bluer bulbs are bad, it's just if you show a picture, it should be true to life, including all the blue glow that'll be present from the bulbs I know you're a big fan of the 20k bulbs
Norman: Depends on what you call "minimal" , they state 20ks + actinics, and there's not much blue in the photo, even though the reality of what you'd see in the tank would have quite a bit of blue, so it looks like the blue glow was completely shopped out, leaving only the non-blues, and fluorescent qualities which as a result look brighter, I'm not saying they're 'shopping in colors that aren't there.

I've been more around the 12-14k look for the last couple of years. Blue lighting has a nice fluorescing effect, but I like full color.

Probably white balance, crop, and resize. Which is pretty much what I'd want to see.

Karl: Oh yah? I thought you were running the 20k Radiums. I concur about the full color though, regardless of how much pop or color change you get unless you have a "theme" going it looks to dark IMO.
Norman: I still don't believe that's the way it looks in the tank that they have to human eyes, I've seen way too many display tanks with 20k bulbs and they all have that blue glow about everything. White balance takes that out of the equation fairly easily.

Norman - Is it considered photoshopping if I auto-balance, crop, and resize? That's what I do, which is the extent of my photo capabilites.

My two favorites have been the Ushio 14k and AquaConnect, which have a 12k look.

Karl: IMO, which I admit doesn't mean much sometimes , only if your auto-balance over compensates and the picture does not look identical (or close) to what you see with your eyes.
Bluer bulbs usually are suspect to an over-correction with an whitebalance.

Ive seen these in person at the local wholesalers and they look a lot like the photos, although i think Ming uses 20ks so that prob. enhances the colors a bit. I know of at least one person bringing in "rarer" anemones, many of which are these different roses so i wouldnt automatically assume these are enhanced. 20k bulbs, maybe, but i doubt anything past very basic photo editing. I could be completely wrong but having seen them in person, i know they exist.

I got to say I don't subsribe to Mike's theory on "photoshopping" of the picture. I don't see anything other then a touch up of the white balance myself, nothing wrong or out of the ordinary about that). Back when you had to use gnarly chemicals (cyandie, etc) to actually develope your own pictures (yup, I remember quite clearly) we used all kinds of methods to help with the photo. Photoshop was built on this idea so for the most part, PS is just simple photography. Some use it a bit harshly, but so did developers back in the day.

That anemone looks pretty much exactly like the picture shows. I saw it in person the day it arrived.
The larger of the two thumbnails wasn't even taken under a 400W 20k bulb. It was under some type of flourescent bulb, though I've never bothered asking what type. |

The clown in the pic does look pretty normal.

That's all I ever do, and I'm usually using Microsoft Photo Editor for that since it's already on my puter. Human eye adjusts for the blue when looking in person. Pics will look too blue unless they are whitebalanced. To me, the Atlantis pics look like they do in person. For the corals anyway. I was there this weekend, but didn't look at the anemones. Here's a pic I took a few months ago at Atlantis. White balanced in the camera to a sheet of paper. Then minimal processing in MS PE. Looks the same to me in person. |

Oh, excuse the pic. It's from a junky camera. Nothing near like what Art or Eric use

Just to jump into the fray, I saw this anemone in person Sunday morning and the colors are true in the link. It was about 12-14" across and the really unusual thing aside from the color was the size of the tentacles ... very thick, around the size of your little finger. A nice specimen and appeared to be quite healthy.

That's not that bad as far as pic. I saw four of them at different sizes at AB about 3 weeks ago. The largest was the size of the colander that they used to hold it in. Beautiful 'nem.

Aquatic Bliss does have three of the same size and color. Not sure about the pricing, but i can say their lights are nothing special, and they look exactly the same.
