need some inputs on setup

so I decided to go with a 4" deep sand bed, but these is a catch. I only want live sand in the area's where there are no live rocks. I would like to have my live rocks sitting on the bare bottom of the tank that way I can get the best of both worlds. do you guys think this would work? I have a 120g which is 48X24X24. I figure 12-18 inch is for live rock while the rest i can cover in a deep sand bed. Thanks in advance.

why not just put the rock in first, and then fill the sand in all around it??? I dont see what the point of having the live sand only where the rock isnt is..

I thin with time the sand is going to move over to the bare bottom leaving you a 2" sand bed then.
