anew mr2 will probably run you about 500 for a new 1 used maybe 300-350. if i had to do it again i probably go with a needlewheel on a venturi for the simple reason is that i have alot of small snails that plug the beckett every couple of days. they do seem to be high maint, but thats just my opinion

Bobbet-

I've run a dual-beckett MR-2 (With an 18" riser) for about two years....

Never had a snail clog it; and don't really see the finicky that you're talking about...

Run warm water weekly through the air intakes, put a strainer (Available at a million onlne vendors), clean the becketts once every two weeks, or better, and you're aces.

Nothing more than you should do with ANY skimmer; venturi, needlewheel, beckett, anything.

Oh, and don't go cheap on the pump. I run a Sequence Wahoo, and pull plenty of goo every day.

If you can get one fairly cheap, do it. It's a great skimmer. Everybody has their prefernece, but I traded a needewheel to get this, and wouldn't go back....

i know, i clean mine top to bottom once a week, but i still get snails plugging it and i need to fine tune it every time i clean it. i run a sequence dart on it, so i don't think it's a pump issue. but like everything else in this hobby, what works for 1 may not work for others. thats why i am going to try my hand at a diy skimmer, wish me luck

Ryan-

Sorry for the delay; here's one...

Bulkhead Screens

You can also get them at Premium Aquatics, Marine Depot, some local pool supply stores, and most decent LFS.

Just put one into your bulkhead for your pump supply, or your feedline, if you do an "Over-the-top" for your external pump.

Good Luck!

-Andy
