Euro-Reef Skimmer Mods

Anyone do a mesh/gate valve/recirc mod to their ER skimmers? Is it worth it? Ive seen TONS of mod threads for ASM skimmers, but not that many for ER.

I did mesh mod on sedra 3500 for my er es6-2. Its working better then before. Without the mesh the skimmer didn't do much. I still need to get a bigger pump for my skimmer to work like it should. What model do you have?

I'll have to check.. I think its a 6-2. Was purchased from a fellow reefer about a year ago. I finally got it going again on my system and its pulling good stuff out, but I know it can do more. The recirc mod looks like an awesome idea. The mesh will be the easiest to try. After a week of production I'll have my base-amount to compare with.

It's a Sedra 3500 (i think) with the stock ER needle-wheel.

I'm running it pretty dry, so say about 1/5 of the cup is full after about 4 days.

Before I added the ER skimmer back in, I only had a BakPak skimmer on the sump and Nitrates were around 40ppm. I havnt checked it since I added the ER skimmer.

Tank: 50 gallon display barebottom, 40 gallon sump FULL of rock and chaeto. Bioload: Pair of clowns, marine beta, yellow tang, royal gramma, B&W clown (tiny), 8" clam, BTA, various LPS, SPS and Zoos.

I think with this bioload I should get more skimmate. The BakPak would pull about a cup (8oz) a week out.

I just did a 30 gallon water change when I added the ER skimmer, so that might impact things a bit too

I did a mesh mod on a er 6-2 with a via aqua 3300 pump and it def works better than before.

I am running two skimmers again.. I have a slight hair algae problem at the moment.

I actually chucked a big colony of microthalma.. ( killin my flow ) and it had hair algae on it...

I might sell some REALLY BIG pieces of red monti cap at swcfm.. 12-18 inches wide pieces. I have about 10 pieces that big.

But the mesh mod is great...

I also increased the performance of my aqua c by flipping the lid upside down and opening it about an inch. It pulls more than the ER now, but it is first in line.

That sounds about right. I get about that much too. Wash it could do better, I think upgrading the pump to 5000 would do much better.

I've actually been kicking around the idea of swapping out the pump on my CS 6-2. I was thinking of an Ocean Runner 2700, but was wondering if anyone has used that pump on a Euro Reef. I'm not overly stoked on the Sedra pumps, and the Gen X I had for a DIY skimmer was just too damn loud. I know Ocean Runners have a good reputation as feed/return pumps, not sure though how they stack up for use on skimmers.

Dave, I have modded both the stock needle-wheel (mesh mod) and the return (gate valve) on my ER 8-2 with a Sedra 5000 and I definitely have noticed a great difference. Another simple mod that cost about $0.12 is a 45 degree pvc elbow.

Place the elbow on the outlet of your Sedra (inside the skimmer) and point in downward (slightly left or right).

This pushes the bubbles down and creates a longer contact time which is a good thing.

Good idea Bill. I should have some time next week to play with this. Gonna try the mesh and the elbow first.

My skimmer is the 6-2 with a Sedra 3500 as I thought. The recirc mod intrigues me the most though.

Thanks everyone for all the info.

This is an interesting idea. Did you notice any issues with more bubbles comming out of the riser tube because you are introducing the bubbles lower into the chamber and closer to the outlet?

No I did not have a problem with bubbles leaving the chamber. Just be sure to adjust the angle of the elbow to the left or the right a little...

The collection cup lid...

I was screwin around with it... frustrated with it as usual...

I took off the lid and all of a sudden thick foamy bubbles appeared...

I figured it was an air issue, so I took off the collection cup lid and flipped it upside down and slid it about halfway across the skimmer top.. it just lays on top now...

I guess the skimmer needed more air to work better...

I also overdrive it with a mag 9.5.

It works better than the mesh mod...

Aqua c has always been a little vague about thier operations.

Seriously this skimmer has frustrated me for years... and to watch it in action now is amazing... And it was just the lid.. and not enough air.

Thanks for the info Frank. I'm off today, so I'm going to try this now. I need to do a little work on the tank today so this is at the top of the list.

Needs for air ????? Strange - - I did notice it builds a lot of pressure inside the unit so it does need to vent more I think you might be right.

Thanks
