How difficult to make your own sump/fuge?
So how difficult is it to make your own sump/fuge? I have done wood work and sometime pieces aren't cut to perfect size but may still work since it doesn't have to be 100% sealed like a aquarium has to be. I imagine with acrylic work eveything cut has to be precies in order for everything to line up correctly and seal.
So how hard is it for a guy with decent wood working skills? I want to maximize my stand space to have the largest sump possible so buying pre-made sumps are out of the question. Would it be better to have a plastic shop cut everything out for me first? |

i found an old fish tank, and i'm putting baffels in it now... plexi-glass is easy to work with. So far i've made a line. cut a little big. then try to fit it. after that i trim what doesn't work....
i'm not done, yet but if it doesn't fit too well on the sides (i cut too much) then i'll just use more silicone... my .02

Buying a small fish tank (used or new) and adding your own baffles (glass or acrylic) is often the easiest and most cost effective way to make a sump. You don't really have to worry about leaks on your seams b/c none of your seams will be external, if there's a leak, it doesn't really matter.

I made my sump/fuge from a 75gal AGA using 1/4" plexi baffles. I used a combo of superglue and silicone. Works great, my next try at it will include drilling for an external pump.

Thanks for the replies. A 60g 36x18x20" would be a perfect size for me to add baffles too. When using an acrylic tank can I add acrylic baffles using acrylic glue or do I have to use silicone?

He's got pretty straight forward, step by step instructions on there. Makes it look pretty easy.
