Tissue loss, Hydnophoria
Been happening this last week.
Took it out last night and dropped some Lugol's solution on it, stressed it out and it looks a bit worse today. I moved it up from the sand about 2 weeks ago and it was fine for over a week. Do I need to worry, should I break off a piece to isolate it? Any ideas, experience, opinions? ![]() |

you dripped Lugol's directly on it??

Yes, I've been told it can be dropped directly onto wounds of corals to help stimulate regrowth?

I would hack that branch off...
Lugols is much too strong to be put directly on your sps corals IMO. |

Crud, really?
My LFS guy put a drop directly onto an open-brain to demo what he does with injured corals. He also said, that Lugols was exactly the same as Kent's dip and that they're basically both iodine. |

Lugol's is of such a concentration that if you drip it directly onto any coral it sterilizes any portions it touches, yes even the live tissue so your dripping did more harm then good. there are instructions on the bottle for making a dip solution. your LFS could care less if he/she gives you bad advice, it's more business for them when you kill your corals.
Hydnophora are Very hardly corals, for one to just start slothing tissue there is a problem that needs to be addressed. not sure what it looked like before you did the dip but the pic above is a VERY unhappy one. |

Thanks for the help here all.
My LFS guy is trusted, been going to him for over 6 years. Possibly he didn't know I'd be putting drops directly onto the Hydno (cause I was getting it mainly for an open brain). The injury amount doubled quickly after I put 2 drops of Lugols on him, won't be doing that again. So do I really need to hack the arm off? Should I really expect this tissue loss to suddenly accelerate to the whole coral, I'm hoping to give em some more time to see some improvement. Of course if he keeps getting bad I'll do just that - bummer. |

it'll kill the open brain tissue as well and yes hack it off, and do so in the healthy tissue or it'll just continue in most cases.
