little jellyfish?
Hi, I was just looking in my tank and I saw this little, tiny thing swimming around in the water. It was all clear and had a round body and short little things on the end of its body. It swam in this kind of twiching forward movement. Could this be a jelly of some kind? I have had my tank set up for about 3 years and have never seen this before, I haven't added anything to the tank lately either. I got the little critter out with a yougurt cup and it is in there now. I thought that it might be a parasite or something. Should I throw it back in or not? Thanks.

Hi,
Just be careful if it is a jellyfish. All jellyfish have a painful sting if you touch their tentacles. However, the box jellyfish from the Pacific comes in various sizes (including very small) and their sting can be deadly. Info on Box Jellys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_jellyfish This is the guy that really scares me (and they are only thimble size): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irukandji_jellyfish |

I had these early on in my 36 gallon reef. Usually, they are hydroid medusa. Possible best, frequent LR hitchhikers.

it didnt look like the one from melevs site. driftin in your second picture it looked like the body was more oval in shape than what I saw in my tank. the one in my tank looked a little more circular. Maybe you just took the picture when it was moving in a swimming moition that made it look more oval? Anyways after reading about how dangerous jellyfish can be I am glad I removed it from the tank whatever it was. thanks.
