90 Gallon tank with 1 overflow. Best submersable pump?

Can anyone tell me which submers pump will do the job best.

Heat and nosie big concerns. durable.

This is a reef tank. Have powerheads available for flow in tank.

Where did you get Ocean runner 2500 from? Anyone local. I need to build stand just like yours but only keep in rough. Plan on setup for 3 mo only

I have a Eheim 1260 on mind, works great, quiet, and hardly any heat transfer. When I switched from Mag to Eheim, the tank temp dropped 3 degrees.

I second the Eheim 1260.

I am considering the same, eheim 1260 or OR2500.

I love eheims, but the low OR wattage for similar flow is very attractive.

the 1260 is also nealry $130 now while the OR is $55.

I am having a hard time justifying the eheim now....

I use the Eheim 1262 on my 90 gallon and have been very happy with the performance and reliability.

I have a center overflow. The return comes out of overflow into 2 1/4-3/8" pipes that are spread to either side of tank for good flow distribution. Will a 2500 ocean runner be ok. Or do I need a 3500. I am concerned 3500 would drain sump. This is going to be an insump installation. System was using a Rio 3100 before it crapped out.

seems like this same questions pops up every few days. I run a rio 2500 on my AGA 90g RR. Works amesome, tonsa flow with a 6' head height. Have that, similair sized pump for skimmer, and 2 powerheads. no heat issues, definatly still need heater on.

My vote goes to the Eheim 1260. It's sooooo quiet in my 90 gallon.

The Eheim 1260 will probably be too small for a return pump. It does not handle head that well. I did some extensive testing and here are my results using a Kill A Watt meter, 10 psi pressure gauge, ball valve, 1 inch water meter and 1" plumbing on the discharge.
Open discharge - 782 GPH at 63 watts
1 psi (2.3') - 492 GPH @ 60 watts
2 psi (4.6') - 433 GPH @ 54 watts
3 psi (7') - 356 GPH @ 50 watts
3.5 psi ( 8') - 300 GPH @ 46 watts
4 psi (9.5') - 253 GPH @ 43 watts

I tested this brand new pump for a friend and was very disappointed. I had heard how Eheims were so good with head pressure but it really dropped off fast.

Compare it to an OceanRunner 2500 which only draws 38 watts maximum at about the same pumping rates and head. I don't have test results for the 2500 but my work with a 3500 showed they were almost dead on with the published data OR provides so I would assume the 2500 is similar. The OR price is also less than half what a 1260 goes for.

My tank is a 100G and I use the OR 3500 for both a return pump and a closed loop pump through a Oceans Motions Squirt and really like the way they perform.

Marine Depot's website contains a graph of the flow/head loss of the Eheim 1260 and 1262. Here's the link:

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_Aquari...html#1260_1262

In my opinion, a 1260 is not too small to use as a return pump for a 90 gallon. On the contrary, I think it is ideal, unless the difference in wattage is important to you. Using DeserRat's numbers, on a 90 gallon tank a 1260 would turnover the water in the tank anywhere between 2.8x (at 9.5" head) to 5.46x (at 2.3' head) per hour.

Again, personal preference, but ~3-5x turnover is exactly the turnover I want to see from my return pump to avoid microbubbles in the tank and for other reasons. I personally prefer to rely on powerheads, such as a Tunze or a Vortech to provide the circulation. For example, just one Vortech at full speed on a 90 gallon will turnover the water 33x.

I have a 1260 on my 90 and find it quiet and perfect...as sirjohn said there is not a HUGE flow, but 3-5x suits me fine. I have three mod'd tunze nanostreams which give great circulation.

As a return from a sump you will more than likely end up with somewhere between 5-7 feet of head due to elevation differences between the sump and display plus any line and fitting loss due to friction. That does not leave you much flow, somewhere between 350 and 400 GPH which is on the weak side to me.

I cant even hear if my OR is on, save money, get the OR... 2500 will be fine, im running mine at about 4.5ish ft of head and still has good flow through a 3/4 inch return with locline split into a y at the end. My red house shows pics of my 90g and OR setup

I'm using a mag 9.5 on my 95 RR, using it externally though since I want to avoid heat. DFS has it on sale right now for 72 bucks

People that say Eheim have obviously never tried the Oceanrunners. They are as quiet as the Eheim. less wattage and look at AZ test results.

Can you justify the extra $55, No way.

The OR will do everything the Eheim does but alot cheaper and less on the monthly utility. This is a slam dunk!

If you got the extra money to throw around so you can say you own an Eheim go for it, but i wouldn't

This is what I probably like most! Of course, dropping a few degrees compared to Mag pump is good too.

I never measured the performance of mine, but at 5ft head, it uses approximately 37 watts and it is faster than the Mag 7 that I had earlier on the same tank.

I know a site you can get OR3500 for $69.89 brand new and you can have premium aquatics price match it, since they have great service.

The 2500 are $54.89 so not that much cheaper than DFS.

I just had PA pricematch a 6500 for $97.99

The OR 3500 is $69.99 and 2500 is $49.99 at www.customaquatic.com and they offer an additional 5% off to RC members on non sale items as both of these are.
