I have this trigger see.........

I have this 4 1/2 inch pink tail trigger in a tank by himself. My dilema is I would like to setup a tank bigger than what he is in or add him to my 300. But I am unsure how he would deal with the smaller fish (Chromis, gramma, ) and soft corals in the 300.

I have not been able to use the search engine on here so I ask everyone.

What do you think?

It all depends on the fish.
Some are docile while others are just plain relentless.
I know it may be hard to tell because it is in a tank by itself, but what have you noticed as far as behavior wise?

He is pretty shy and reclusive. When you approach the tank he hides in his PVC tube and watches you.

Soft corals like sinularia, mushrooms (he can eat all those he wants)
leathers and 2 clams.

I am tempted to try it but he may be hard to catch if I need to get him out.

I have sps, lps, zoas, softies, mushrooms, anemones, clams, and all of th usual cleanup inverts.I do have small frags of sps and he does not move them.I have had no problems with my niger,I have dmsels and other small fish as well.I plan on adding a pair of Bluethroat Triggers and a pinktail when I expand my reef tank.I would always add a trigger last to a well established reef tank.I am sure in time he will strat moving stuff but I think if you keep them well fed with a varied diet they are fine.I love having my trigger in my reef,or a trigger in any tank for that matter!!!

I used to keep my Pinktail with smaller fish and it was great, I have kept it with corals, no problem. In all these years with this fish it has been great, BUT recently it killed my Bluethroat. My blue throat was 5 inches, my pinktail is 10 - 12 inches, the bluethroat harassed it, my pinktail snapped. Even after this I would still try it with smaller fish.........

VolitanLioness,

How big was the tank you had your pink tail in, how big was he and how small were the smaller fish you kept him with?

I would worry about the inverts and clams more than small fish. Triggers in the wild eat these things all day......the corals I think would be fine.....but you never know, its all about the fish.

I have him in my 300g, I kept him with chromis, little clowns and small wrasse. I have had him with Brittle Stars and Urchins trouble free, but he will eat snails, hermits and shrimps.

Well I have no Snails or shrimp, but just one hermit.

Sounds like he may like the clams though?

I added a Blue Throat Trigger and a Blue Line Trigger to my reef today both about 3 inches to go with my Niger. They are letting the cleaner shrimp clean them and are not touching any inverts or corals. As long as you feed them properly they should be good citizens in a reef adding lots of activity and personality to a reef tank. But that is just my opinion as I am a Trigger fish nut.

Well he is in the big tank. He is pretty shy. with even the little fish displaying in front of him. So I will keep an eye on things.
