Everyone has the same boring oak stand

After looking at my stand I realized that its boring, sure oak is pretty but almost everyone has it.........

So if you have a something different and want to show it off, nows the time....

If you look in most homes oak is most often used in trim and other areas. It wouldn't look very nice to have oak trim and cabinets and then your stand is cherry.

I like the simple oak stands and canopies. The tank is supposed to stand out and be what the eye goes to first. If you have a flashy, decorative stand I think it takes away from the tank. But to each his own.

Mines not Oak. It's Pine with Birch doors. It's still the same ol' boring stand though

Well generally, I think the reason most have the same stand design is simply becuase there is not much room for deviance in stand design because the stands most be strong and sturdy to support so much weight and distribute it over a large as possible area. I would like a cool wroght(sp?) iron stand, but it would not support the weight of a larger tank ( the legs would concentrate too much weight into too small of an area)

That's my thoughts, feel free to correct me if I am wrong

I have standard black for my cichlid tank. My cabinets are dark cherry, with grey and black laminate tops; oak would look ghastly. My other tanks are small and nano. My 20L FW angel tank is on a metal stand.

I couldn't tell you what kind of wood our stand is made of, but it's purple! We bought our tank from a LFS that had painted all of their stands this shade of purple. This tank was housing their liverock before they upgraded to a larger tank. We didn't bother repainting it. There's no canopy, just the stand.

Oceanic Wave tank offers alternative

When the 95G Wave tank first came out, it offered an ugly black and stainless hood and stand. They just came out with a cherry stand that I am partial to...it looks good with our furniture...

I wish there was an easier way to post photos on this forum. A photo is in our gallery.

I believe wrought iron stands can rust from salt deposits as well.

Peter,
I've been searching for some time now and came up with very little. Would be nice to find the thread you are talking about!

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. I tried all sorts of key words like "metal, stand, custom, finish" etc. and still came up with nothing. I know I posted in the thread, so I guess I could always search my posts, but ugh! over 7000, it would take a while, especially since I have no recollection of when it was....

This is a bathroom vanity from Lowes. Bought it cheap with a broken drawer, which I didn't need anyway. The top is black marble...........

Nope. It was a multi page thread. Maybe it's in a random forum that I don't frequent?

My last homemade stand was rough cut cedar. Below is a pic but it doesn not have all the final trim pieces on it, there was piece wraping the top of the stand that covered the plywood edge and tank trim piece. It is a workbench in the garage now since I moved, the next big tank will be an inwall with pecky cypress trim
