DAS EX-1 Skimmer for my 60 gallon

I am looking for a good skimmer for my 60 gallon tank and I somebody suggested DAS.

Any feedbacks on the DAS EX-1 ?

Hey thanks for the link. HBtank: nice pictures!

It looks like the only thing DAS missed when they designed the EX-1 was an external drain for the collection cup since it's kind of small.

I think I am set for the EX-1 to replace my Octopus NW-150 sometime soon!

I have 3/4" ID vinyl hose on it.

Yeh, I am going to install a drain this weekend. At least it is about as easy of a mod as there is...

HBTank,

How high in inches is the return from the skimmer from the base of the unit up? I just want to be sure i get the correct size height on the sump.

Thanks

Well, it is not that I don't like it but there is a few things about it that don't make it a good choice for me.

1. It requires mods to perform better and since I am not very handy I would prefer something that out of the box is ready to go.

2. I think this is a problem with all regular NW skimmers but everytime I do a water change to the tank and the water level in the sump varies the skimmer overflows the collection cup or at least I have to re adjust it. I tried the gate valve and I was not able to get it to work properly.

3. My sump is kind of small and the Octopus pretty much takes all the space in it so I am not able to have a fuge.

Don't get me wrong I think the Octopus is a great skimmer and when is welr adjusted it does a great job, I guess it's just not a perfect fit fot my setup or me...

You can see a picture of my setup on my gallery.

Good question.... one that would have made it a lot easier to install mine if I had asked.. lol...

Hard to get a perfect measurement as it is installed, but some where between 14 and 14.5 inches. 14 inches to be safe and give some clearance.

I don't know if I got this right. Are you talking about what is shown in the picture?

My sump is 16", can I use a platform for the EX-1 to make it taller? would that affect its performance?

Yes, you can and it will not have any affect on it's performance.

My sump is 16" and I had to use a platform. lucky enough I has something laying around that fit perfectly. Could have easily been planned for with something cut or purchased to size though...

That's good to know, a platform is a very fix. Do you think it will be a good idea to make the mod shown in the picture?
