Tunze Wavebox 6212

I saw one of these on a tank at exotic aquatic the other day and was extremly impressed by the gentle swaying of the corals produced by this wavemaker. unfortunatly like all really cool gadgets in this hobby, the little wavemaker box costs $500 online! What methods do you guys use to produce variable current? What is the best cheap alternitive to expensive equipment? I am trying to figure out a way to produce a nice swaying current in my 75gl.
Ryan

Sorry if I intrude in this forum. Just doing a random search on Tunze and this thread came up.

Tunze really runs circles around other pumps when it comes to producing gentle yet wide currents. Other pumps tend to produce strong narrow streams.

I believe you can achieve similar result with 2x Tunze Turbelle Stream + controller. Price will most likely be even more expensive. Most people with the wavebox still have other pumps to supplement the current.

Reef Keeper 2 and a few MJs should work for your tank.

Since you already have the MJs, just get the RK2 and set it up. You get other options like light timer, standby for feeding, etc.

Ryan, It will be hard to duplicate the wave action you observed with power heads, the reason is because the wavebox is not really doing this wave action thru flow alone but rather by a more complex but yet simple design that uses resonance & amplitude of your tank, to understand how this works, imagine about 2 gallons of water volume coming out and reentering your tank every second or so, this action will generate energy that will travel across your tank and resonate on the other end back to you, the wave box uses a controller that regulates the timing of this resonance wich basically increases the wave height and sequence according to your tank.

if your interested...i've got a powerstrip that has a timer built in as a wavemaker. its made by naturalwave. $20 and its yours. I used to have it set up on 3 powerheads in my tank but now have a closed loop. It was awesome. 3 maxijet 1200's and this thing and you'll be good! the cycles are timed so when #1 is on #2 is off. and then #3 turns on for both of #1 and #2 cycles and then is off for the double cycle. I really liked the random flow this created in my tank. Let me know if you want it.
