Dark coloured Mandarin

My LFS recently got in a blue mandarin, and his colours are a lot darker than what I've seen in other people's tanks. Does this happen because of shipping stress, or is it just a colour variant?

Thanks

Huh, I thought that "red mandarins" were S. rubrovinctus, not a color variant of S. splendidus. Are these color variants related to location?

My female mandarin has a narrow green stripes and larger red making it look more red. My male mandarin (in my avatar) has a large green stripes (almost the same as the red). I like to see them swim close to each other. Easy to tell even when dorsal fins are folded.
