Selcon Questions
I've considered using Selcon, but have wondered how much of it actually soaks into thawed-out meaty foods (krill, clams, etc.) so that the fish will actually ingest it, and how much of it just dissipates into the aquarium water.
Also, does it cloud aquarium water? And has anyone noticed whether or not its presence in the water will make a protein skimmer go nuts? Thanks for any input.

It will soak into frozen foods if you let it sit for a while (at least a half an hour), but it does better with flake food and gut-loading brine shrimp.
It won't cloud the water. I usually don't pour the left over "juice" in the tank and you really don't need but a couple of drops. good stuff.

yes you can definitely add it straight to your tank, your filter feeders will love it too

Yeah, it is good for your inverts too. I only have a few fish so when I thaw out a frozen cube, it lasts me for a few days. I only use the Selcon once in a while so they stay used to it. I'll thaw out a cube of mysis, drain the water, and then just put enough Selcon in the measuring cup so that the food is submerged when I tip it up. Then I'll mix a little cyclopeez with it and let it sit there for a few minutes.
Then I'll take it over to the tank and feed about a third of it. The rest goes into the fridge to feed them with over the next two days. After that's gone, I'll feed them something else. Even though the food hasn't soaked long for the first feeding, there's still quite a bit of it on the stuff and around it. I figure when the fish are biting into the clump of food with selcon coming off of it, they have to be ingesting some of it. Then of course, the rest of it that's left has soaked for 24 to 48 hours. It doesn't cloud my water but it will kill the head on a skimmer for a while. Frozen food by itself can do that though. |
