Very nice Maroon. im taking the setup down and hes got to go.

its an older pic but the only one i have...dont worry he has a tail...

id like to get 25.00 for him

How big is she now Mike? I wish we were closer; I'll have to see if anyone is planning to make the Nash-Knox hike anytime soon. I'd love to have another white-stripe...

fishboy, I think angela short goes to knoxville quite a bit and actually has some friends that might be from around there coming in this weekend, so you might want to find out if anyone in her group could transport, OR see if she is going that way again soon. Hope I am right, I THINK that is where she has family.....if I am wrong, sorry, just a thought.

ill try to take some new pics (My fish wont be still for just a second) shes about 2 1/2 in but im not the best at sizing them up. shes very fat and healthy with great color...very active fish

it was my thinking that the less dominant of to clowns would change sex...is this not the case with maroons?

Once a female, they can't change back to a male.

I think I've heard they can change back, but it isn't common (I think it's been witnessed in captivity, but not common-I've already packed up my Coral magazines, but there was something from Ellen Thaler, I think, about observations of sex changes in clowns).

Is there a certain age that clowns have to be in order to change into a female. The reason I ask is because we have a white stripe maroon that's about an inch and a half long (can't be much more than probably 8 months old if i had to guess) that beat up a similar sized maroon. In the process of fighting, our six line kind of finished the non-dominant one off. So, I've been thinking about getting another one, but am concerned about size. If the dominant one (which I'm guessing will turn into a female if "its" not already) doesn't accept the new addition pretty quick I'm worried I'll have a similar situation on my hands. I was thinking about getting one that is significantly larger than the one we have now, but if they're going to slug it out until one dies I don't want to do that either. Don't mean to hijack, but any thoughts? If it will likely work out, I'd be interested.

That's definitely a female, so I'd pair it with a juvenile fish pulled from growout. Maroons are the easiest to match-up IME because of their "strong" dispositions. Male maroons tend to be quite small, so it is sometimes difficult to find them unless captive-bred or wild-caught pairs.

As far as I know, sex-change in clownfish is a one-way street. The article in Coral magazine suggests that a clarkii pair reversed roles, and I wouldn't want to discount what Ellen wrote there, but I think it is the only "documented" case.

DMBillies, I'm not sure how old maroons need to be to be sexually mature. The smallest spawning female maroon I've seen was still probably 2.5" long (still a big clown, just not by maroon standards

). They can be paired though as long as the size-difference is a large one--this is especially important for maroons since they are so agressive. I guess it would be a close-call on your pair. I always assume that a fish kept alone for several weeks is female, which is a way of playing-it "safe" in pairing clowns.

Interesting question. If logic follows and the remaining one is female, a larger one could potentially be problems (?). Matt might know something from experiences.

. I agree. If I saw it, I would believe it, but a single 'documented' case isn't really enough for me to put too much belief in. I wonder how long the fighting would go on for that to happen and how bad would the carnage be...

I have a white stripe maroon as well, and when I get my 75 up and running, I'll try to find her a mate.
But I'm taking the safest route. I'll try and find the youngest one that I can find, so there's no doubt.
