Goldentail moray

Those that keep goldentail morays, what size tank do you have your eel in? What tank mates are in with the eel? How aggressive are they with tank mates? My lfs has one and I'm thinking about buying it.
Thanks.

I LOVE my goldtail. I've had him for 6 years. he is in a 11g tank with BIG V.lion. niger trigger, fox face, panther grouper, puffer, H.tusk sailfin tang. GREAT eel. Sometimes he stops eating for a few weeks but that seems to be normal.

Besides the goofy answer above, I have a dwarf lionfish, goldentail moray, and an orange toadfish in a 60 gallon cube. They do fine together. A small fish would be toast from any of them.

How big is your toadfish? Has the eel ever bothered it? I'm thinking about getting the eel. It will share a tank with a toadfish (4") and some other larger fish. Wondering how the eel will do with fish that live on the bottom. THe eel is about 12".

At 12" you should be fine, the eel is too small to eat anything that you currently have. The toadfish are no whimps.

Is it the golden morph variety that looks like a ripe banana? That is the kind I have. Mine is 24 inches long and I have had him for almost 3 years. He lives with a 9 inch mappa puffer, 4 inch clown trigger, 6 inch emperor angel and 6 inch purple tang. He is not agressive with these guys, but he did eat a huge hermit crab that lived in a queen conch shell and he also killed a 3 inch bluespot puffer/toby.

I currently have about a 15" goldentail, the brazilian yellow morph. I have the opportunity to acquire a 4" flame angel for free from a friend who is having problems with him nipping at corals in his tank. As of right now, the angel looks way too big to be bothered by the goldentail. But as the goldentail grows, is the angel likely to become dinner? I really don't want the angel if that is likely to be the case, I'm sure he'll find another home for it. Perhaps if I add the angel now, with the eel still too small to think about eating him, then with time the eel may come to accept the angel as not being food even when he gets big enough to think about eating him? Or is this wishful thinking?

My goldentail and toadfish share the same hole. All three eat thawed shrimp or squid off of wooden skewer. I usually draw the eel out of the same hole (if they are in the same) to avoid any problems during feeding.

Personally, the toadfish is like the most laidback easy going fish!! They are the couch potatoes of the fish world (way more than my scorpionfish in another tank). They NEVER leave the hole.

Our Goldentail is great, he is around 15 inches. He is very laid back and hasn't bothered any fish. We have a Niger trigger, Black Hawain Trigger, Sailfin Tang and a Blue Hamlet in a 240 gallon. They get around 24 inches. We have kept him with a Chainlink eel and two Zebra eels also.

Here is a pic with him and a large hermit crab.

I have had mine for about 2 years in a 100 gallon tank (he is about 18-24 inches) with a 4 inch Queen Angel and a dwarf lion and a maroon clown. He doesnt bother anyone and is very interactive (when he is hungry). He is my favorite fish and very non-aggressive.

What is everyone using for secure tops to stop escapes? Glass, canopy, screens, etc., etc?

Glass canopy. I also use the plastic strips that come with it. Cut them to fit around the overflow box and return line. I also cut up pieces of sponge to fit in the small holes.
However, the eel got out last week while I was feeding. Came up to the top, stuck its head out, and kept on going. Landed on the floor. Finally was able to scoop it up in a net and dump back into the tank.

Where are you all getting your eels? I see liveaquaria.com sells a lot of them in their Diver's Den section (goldentails).
