this is my favorite one (it's looking sickly nowadays though ). it's shrunk quite a bit from it's glory days. been troubleshooting the cause for the past couple of months.
but it's a variety i've yet to (convincely) ID. it has a bright yellow stalk but with a greenish (sometimes purplish) capitulum/crown. at the largest point it was about the size of a little league mitt. unfortunately, now it's about the size of the baseball. the pic is a bit purplish because of the lighting (sorry), 2x250W 20000K with 2x110W actinics. just a bit blue. i tried to correct it with ps though but it's still off (yellow stalk depicted above is actually muted and the crown is even greener than that).

the interesting coloration for the coral is actually the yellow stalk and green/purple cap. when it was very ill recently the cap was a smooth lime green (which it shouldn't be ). but the good news is that due to some recent re-re-re-adjustments (which i'm still in the process of confirming was the actual difference) i think the coral has turned the corner at last! it's been offish for since august! and slowly shrinking. but it's now re-orientated itself and showing polyp structure again on its cap (versus being smooth). i'll try and post some sick and healthy(ier) pictures in the coming weeks.

not sure the real reason behind the "illness" yet. but i tend to eliminate things/issues step-by-step. this time though i changed two variables, position and protein skimmer. whichever was the culprit/solution, it showed improvement on the green cap sarco and a sick s. latum i've been fretting about for an even longer time period (about 6-months). but the change/improvement for both species was very distinct and coinciding so i figure it wasn't just by some chance illness improvement but rather a physical factor change (skimmer or move). otoh, it could be inter-related though (i.e. improvement of one stopped chemical distress signals being exuded and affecting the other). i'm waiting for both to improve further for a while before testing my hypothesis either way though.
