Its a mix of Southdown (actually Yardright, 4 bags) and a caribsea (really fine mix-4 bags) and some old southdown out of my current tank.

I will be adding 3 more bags of aragamax select in the next few days.

why do you have three or fou return lines coming into the bottom of the aquarium? is that part of a closed loop? sorry, i donnot have time to read through all pages of this thread.
are those returns stopping right where you have them now, or will they be extended or something?
very nice tank. i just dont understand the return line set-up. can you explain your thought on this, or refer me to the post that expains it.

i'm not a big fan of ruturn lines coming into the bottom of aquariums like that because it seems like you are relying on check valves to prevent your sump from overfilling. Is this correct? are you relying on checkvalves?
check valves fail, especially once they get some slime and crutyness worked into them. do you have some plumbing worked out to prevent relying on checkvalves somehow? If you ever have to address a plumbing ussue with one of those lines in the future, you will almost have to drain the whole tank to fix it.

am i mistaken about how i am looking at this situation? am I overly paranoid about bulkheads on the bottom of aquariums? lets hope so.

I believe you are mistaken. This is a closed loop, not a sump return.

The returns you see are all connected in a closed loop.

Paul,

When are you planning on framing the wall around the tank?

Did you not want to do that before you filled it with water and started running it? I would personally worry about spilling things in the tank while framing and finishing. Like mud, paint, dust, etc. What are your thoughts on this?

Well...I dont think dropping things in will be a problem and right now its more important for me to have complete access to the top and sides while i work on the aquascaping etc. With the tank being 8x4 it is very easy to cover the top. Add a little plastic sheeting, and all will be well.
