Well, i'm thinking about throwing two 3000's on a diy 12" reaction chamber that is 17" tall with a 6" or 8" neck diameter thats 6" long. So a total of 23". I was thinkin the two pumps instead of a large laguna to avoid a bubble plate. Do you think that would work. I'm hoping for 80-100scfh. As richcon said, he would pry go with a 8" diameter neck, so we'll see.

I am just going to cut down the wheel size a little more till I get 35 scfh, which should decrease the wattage to about 20-23 watts simualr to the new BM160. I just dont think that I will have the bioload in the system to support a 4 inch neck with a 45 scfh pump. This seems to be a problem with people running the BM200 on smaller tanks, the skimmer works well until it catchs up to the tank and produces almost no skimmate after that. I am trying to aviod this and think I want to go for the 3.5" neck. However, I think 35 scfh is too much for a 6 inch diameter so I need to go to 8 inches. The BKmini 200 pulls 800 LPH so I was thinking that maybe that would be a better copy if I pull the pump down to about 1000 LPH. Any suggestions/comments would be much appreciated. |

Okay, this is the intake restriction that I got the pump to do 55 scfh at 27 watts. Again, you have to assist with the start by restricting the water intake intialt. However, the way the water is restricted in relation to the air intake is key. I dremeled open the QO pipe fitting connector open to 1 inch in diamter. I dremeled the base of the disposable margarita glass so that it could fit into the pipe connector, ie inch in diamter, and then fied the stem down to where it was 15 mm in diameter. THe approxiamte cuts are shown in the last photo in red. This simply screws onto the intake and the end of the restriction where it is 15 mm goes past the air intake and touches the fins that support the shaft holder on the volute cover.

You think it would even be worth a try then? And question for your design. Did you put the margarita piece inside the pvc and you have the small portion right before your venturi? Here's a thought that i did a while back. I took a piece of pvc and put a metal hose clamp on it, then boiled it up and every minute or two tightened it up. It worked very well but after thinking about it, i screwed up cuz i put the injector in the small hole instead of just after(doh) but that worked very well and i'll try it again this weekend to see what happens.

I've got a 4000 that I figured I'd try but then I decided to go ahead with the Eheim and use the 4000 for a return pump. I really want the skimmer pump to be as quiet as possible...I've seen the AP851 and it skims like a champ so since my skimmer will be exactly the same size, anything between 900-1100 LPH would be great and I'm sure I'll get that out of the 1262....Have you guys seen much success modding the 1262? |

IMO you will get between 1200-1300 LPH without any problem .

Sounds good- I'm really looking forward to getting started on the skimmer build. I probably won't have the tank set up until Jan/feb or so but I'll be building this other stuff soon...I've gotta find another source for a twistlock flange....I kinda lost touch with my CNC guy!

The sicce your are referring to I believe has a much smaller volute, and I dont think it is as easy to mod. On the mod, the Margerita glass piece just goes inside the pipe fitting that came with the pump. The end extends past the air intake, it if you look through the air intake in the side of the volute cover, you will see the margertia glass piece. |

dudedudedude: Good work. Have you thought about replacing the volute cap that the inlet is part of with something else (like a piece of PVC or acrylic with a 1" inlet). The volute cap is very deep. I wonder if replacing it with one that isn't so deep would help by increasing the volume of the volute...

I have simply placed the volute cover ontop without twisting it in, giving a 1/4 " in volute hieght. I really did not see any difference. The QO3000 volute is actually 2 mm taller than the PSK-2500 so I might try to decrease it on the QO. |

Any comments on how loud this pump is with the mesh? I don't think any one you actually heard my skimmer with the 4 4100's on it but it was pretty damn loud and this one's gonna be in-stand in an apartment so I need it whisper quiet. My buddy's got an H@S with 2 1260's on it and you can barely hear the thing running!

http://www.aquaticlifeaquariums.com....rget=d168.html It's doubtful to be the same pump. Lower output (3700lph), higher wattage (55 over 40), and lower total head capabilities (2.3m instead of 10ft). The pump curves aren't a match either. And doesn't look the same physically to me either. A QO4000 looks exactly like a QO3000 and a QO2000 except for the diameter of the volute intake and possibly the output diameter (can't remember but can check). All 3 QO models listed have 1" MPT intake and output. |

The QO is quiet, it vibrates a little at first but once the mesh settles down after a few days all you can really hear is the air, which is also quieter than most pumps I have heard. With a slilencer and placed in a cabinet I dont think a mesh mod QO will be heard at all. Also, I know you want to mesh mod the ehiem, but I heard, and by know means know if this is true, that one of the reasons ATI switched from the ehiem was that it was inconsistent in regards to air output. However, I have not seen this to be an issue with the NW ehiems |
