Wow, I do not like Hydor 4.
I thought it would be a nice upgrade to my 210 to add 2 Hydor 4's to my reef tank. I put one in each upper corner of the tank. In my opinion they are weak. I also have 4 mj 1200's and any one of them create more movement than the hydors. If I drop a food pellet it gets blown about 12" away and then floats straight to the top. I guess they were more designed for a very dispersed flow.
I was concidering the mj 1200 mods but I liked the idea of the hydor pivot, they can be aimed anywhere while staying firm to the glass. Anyone with a similar experience? |

I agree, they are a little weak, but they're still nice pumps.

Oh yeah, I hear you can mod them with the MJ props and they'll kick butt.

Ahh I need to look into that now, thanks. I hate those flourescent orange props anyway. |

i was thinking of moding mine too. you can actually cut the outer housing cover in half, cut out the leftover pieces on the end closest to the X and glue them back together to make them shorter.

a Maxijet does not create more flow then the Hydor, neither of these powerheads would be adequate for a 210 gallon. Youre going to need something like a Tunze turbelle stream.

Disagree.... my modded MJ Is probably 3x's stronger than my koralia 3. They push 2500gph++

But you are right in regards to not needing a Tunze Stream (though modded nanostreams are pretty nice)... I also think your estimate of flow a just a LITTLE exagerated as well. Also, you fail to mention that you can mod the Koralias the same way as the MJ's, and that in the end they look better and have magnet rotating mounts. So it is just a bit unfair to start comparing modded equipment to stock, especially when that stock equipment can be modded the same way (and easier BTW) for the same results, with the addition of better looks and mounting system that can't be matched or cost a significant amount of extra $$ with the MJ mod. I think Maxistreams, Koralias and Nanostreams are all pretty good solutions at the moment. Each have pros and cons. I think my next buy will be some vortechs, just because I am an equipment geek and that battery backup is pretty darn cool Last edited by HBtank; 07/17/2007 at 03:32 PM. |

I was not happy with my flow in my 210 either, so I got a Tunze 6060 and love it. So I bought another for the other side of my tank, except I forgot to pick up the magnet for it, so that is ordered, and when I put that in, I think I will be quite happy with my flow.

The reason the flow seems weak is because the flow is much wider. I'm going to use two Tunze 6060 and two 6045s in my 75 BB tank which will be a perfect amount of flow.

They are more dispersed flow....but they are meant to be. I'd getting 2 #4s but for a much smaller tank..a 55g

So, a stock Hydor 4 kills a stack MJ1200, but what about a mod'd Hydor 4 -VS- a mod'd MJ1200?

I started this because everyone kept saying that the didnt want to put 4's in their tanks because it would be too much current. Yeah they may be great for circulation but some xenias 12" away hardly feel the breeze.

like they said.. the mj1200 has much more velocity because its narrow but its not moving nearly as much water.. i have mjmod and i love it.. pushes alot of water in a wide pattern.. hydors are pretty nice too id go for the mod

I don't like them either. The flow is wide, but chaotic .. kind of in all directions.
The quality of flow that comes out of tunzes is MUCH better. I think the koralias really suck actually. Like 4 jets of water flowing in all directions .. put your hand in front of it and you'll feel what i mean. It's hard to design a flow pattern in a tank with pumps like this. |

IME, chaotic flow is better. In fact this is what most try to acheive. This is why people used wavemakers, so the flow is constantly changing, or intersect powerhead flow or point powerheads at the glass. Random chaotic flow helps ensure that at least occasionally, flow is getting everywhere. Now on a bb tank with 50x + flow, I can see where this wouldnt be needed, but show me a tank with that much flow that doesnt have massive chaotic flow!

The version two of these have a little piece of plastic inside that makes the flow more forward (still chaotic).
